Macallan 18 Year Sherry Oak Cask
Single Malt — Highlands, Scotland
Reviewed October 14, 2017 (edited February 26, 2018)I'm reminded of the words of the great philosopher Flavor Flav: DON'T don't don't don't DON'T BELIEVE THE HYPE. Is it good? Yes. Is it $240 USD good? Do bears make great house pets? More importantly, someone explain to me how a NAS like the Rare Cask takes this 18 Year Old to the cleaners. Well... at least the Edrington Group priced both expressions properly in relation to one another. The nose has notes of orange peel and dried fruits. The palate is rich with wood spices, almond paste, a nuttiness I can't quite pinpoint , and dark chocolate on the back end. It's extremely complex, with further notes of dates, clove, and ginger. The finish... it's a tad too short. This expression is for people who have money to burn. Idiots like me. For the financially savvy among us, the Parliament 21 is a much better choice. Slainte! -
Glen Garioch 1995
Single Malt — Highlands, Scotland
Reviewed October 14, 2017 (edited November 3, 2017)I'm on the fence on this one. It's a perplexing single malt, and I think sherry casks would have helped -
The Glenrothes Peated Cask Reserve
Single Malt — Speyside, Scotland
Reviewed October 14, 2017 (edited November 3, 2017)A pleasant nose, lightly peated with peppermint notes - you can tell the peat is only coming from the casks and not the distilling process. The palate has no salt or smoke, with toasted barley, wood spices, and brown sugar notes. I kinda like it. -
Glenkinchie 1991 24 Year (2016 Special Release)
Single Malt — Lowlands, Scotland
Reviewed October 14, 2017 (edited November 3, 2017)95%??? That's quite generous. Considering the ABV and especially the price point, the nose is underwhelming. Sure water helps, but unless you're Moses the H2O ain't offering miracles. The palate has notes of black tea, butterscotch, some apple, and wine must. Speaking of must, you must save your money and skip this one. -
Glengoyne 21 Year
Single Malt — Highlands, Scotland
Reviewed October 14, 2017 (edited September 15, 2018)A strong sherry presence, with almonds, cooked raisins, and cinnamon on the nose. The palate is quite whiny though not a "sherry bomb", with a syrupy texture and full body. There's wood spices and a touch of oak on the finish, with an aftertaste that is quite long. Very similar to the Glendronach 21 Parliament. -
Kilchoman Red Wine Cask Matured (2017 Edition)
Single Malt — Islay, Scotland
Reviewed October 14, 2017 (edited October 21, 2024)Absolutely delicious, with orange rinds and berries on the nose. The palate is winey and briny in a way that is unpredictably satisfying, with a finish that is long and balanced. Worth your try. -
Kilchoman Original Cask Strength (2016 Release)
Single Malt — Islay, Scotland
Reviewed October 14, 2017A great expression coming out of this distillery. Vanilla and oak pair wonderfully with nuttiness. Very complex and delicious. -
Kilchoman Loch Gorm (2017 Edition)
Single Malt — Islay, Scotland
Reviewed October 14, 2017 (edited January 4, 2020)Permit me to quote one of the great poets of our generation, B-Real: here is something you can't understand, how I could just Kilchoman. Sultana on the nose, and salt & seaweed on the palate. It's a decent whisky to drink, and an even better remedy to reduce inflammation of the gums. Cheers! -
Tullibardine The Murray
Single Malt — Highland, Scotland
Reviewed October 14, 2017 (edited June 13, 2018)If wine finishes are your thing, this bottle is for you. It's "Shut up and take my money" whisky. There's fresh grapes, wine must, vanilla, a certain pepperiness, and oak. It all comes together superbly, with a finish that is quite long.
