The Glenrothes Robur Reserve
Single Malt — Speyside, Scotland
Reviewed June 19, 2018 (edited January 17, 2020)Fail! Honey and walnut on the nose. Heather on the palate. Flat and weak. One-dimensional. Consider it a ripoff even if you're offered it for free. -
Ragtime Rye American Straight Whiskey
Rye — New York, USA
Reviewed June 18, 2018 (edited June 20, 2018)I'm not a bourbon kind of guy, much less rye, but this is enjoyable. There's black tea on the nose, with vanilla cream and rye. The palate has notes of tobacco, cherries, dill and charred oak. Finish is full and fairly long. -
Only 6500 bottles were ever produced??? Sad... Really great whisky - it's fruity and aromatic, with pear and vanilla on the nose. Palate has notes of cereal and sugar, like Frosted Flakes (AKA my favorite breakfast cereal). The finish has hints of cacao nibs. The texture is oily with a finish that is fairly long. If you can get past its well-hydrated urine-like color and the fact that getting your hands on this thing requires the services of Dog The Bounty Hunter... we're taking about excellent stuff here.

SOLID, solid stuff! The nose is fresh and aromatic, with hints of apples and wax. The palate has toasted barley, some oak and a touch of ginger. The finish is fairly long and well-balanced. I'm not saying you should hunt this one down, but if you come across it and the price is right... by all means buy it.

Tomintoul 12 Year Oloroso Cask Finish
Single Malt — Speyside, Scotland
Reviewed June 18, 2018 (edited December 15, 2019)What travesty to hand this thing an expert score of 75! It deserves better. Fruit cake and walnut on the nose with a touch of baking spice - balanced and evocative of a holiday dessert. The palate has touches of caramel candy and honey. A good dessert whisky. -
I have no clue what the hell a Muckle Flugga is - can't be Gaelic / sounds like a name cooked by Jim Henson - but it was surprisingly delicious. There's oak and vanilla on the nose (bourbon), with honey and carnation on the palate. It's balanced but weak, and the low ABV hinders. Still not bad. Cheers!
