There's an almost smokey element to the nose. If you smell this it's undeniably gin. There's enough juniper there to convey that. But there's so much else going on that you're going to keep going back trying to figure out exactly what this is. Some citrus to be sure. But also cinnamon and star anise are pretty forward for a gin. A very subtly sweet, smooth in the mouth gin. This is one I want to keep on the shelves

Angel's Envy Rye Finished in Caribbean Rum Casks
Rye — USA
Reviewed April 3, 2022 (edited April 29, 2022)Maple breakfast, but feels to me me more like a bourbon maple breakfast. There's some spice rye on the finish, but it only reveals itself on the way out -
This is much more straightforward like good tequila with some good age and some good wood. The wood comes through a little more clear, both on the nose and on the pallet. Little bit more of an alcohol burn here compared to tapatio. Less green flavors and more subtle hints of vanilla and caramel. This is kind of reminding me of tequila and bourbon. And that's not a bad thing.

There's something Dusty on the nose here. On the pallet is that typical agave sweetness, and for me there's like a corny kind of quality. There's also some green vegetable notes. Maybe almost something like roasted broccoli. And then the tail end is definitely like a Dusty pepper note with that wood coming through

Montelobos Espadín Mezcal Joven
Mezcal Joven — Oaxaca, Mexico
Reviewed April 2, 2022 (edited June 28, 2022)Wow. The nose is enticing, with sweet agave, grassy green vegetal notes, and a light smokiness. The palette is mildly sweet, with a savory middle, and that green pepper, smokey tail end reminiscent of poblano. This stuff is ridiculously easy to drink neat. It's also really nice on the rocks. Have yet to try it in cocktails, but I'm sure this would make a mean mezcalita -
Macallan 12 Year Sherry Oak Cask
Single Malt — Highlands, Scotland
Reviewed March 27, 2022 (edited August 5, 2022)Really good. Brown butter, soft leather, and sweet pipe tobacco. Maybe some dark fruits… dried figs and prunes. And a nuttiness that for some reason my brain keeps wanting to label as “dried leaves”.
