Alberta Premium Cask Strength Rye
Canadian — Alberta, Canada
Reviewed April 9, 2021 (edited June 13, 2022)Pale straw/ copper color, lots of slow running legs come down like sheets. Nose has a nice balance of tart fruit, oak and barn funk rye grain. Vanilla tones in there too. Softer on the palate than one might think and a sweeter finish than I'd expect. Green apple front, some perfumey/floral notes mid way, Vanilla and caramel. Lots of oak on the finish, with cedar or sandalwood notes. Super soft and smooth can be drank without dilution, but definitely opens up and spreads out with a splash of water. -
Dark golden hay color, lots of slow running legs. Nose is very complex: golden raisins, green apple, freshly cut old oak boards, vanilla, rye funk, cobwebs and a touch of baking spice. Soft mouthfeel carries a slow warming effect. Some astringency follows the swallow and the tart fruity notes start popping through the oak and light caramel. Finish is buttered toast, dry oak and more green apple. Super complex, yet really well balanced. I'd leverage my budget towards bourbon rather than ponying up for a rye with this price tag, but I really appreciate it nonetheless.

1792 Full Proof Straight Bourbon
Bourbon — Kentucky, USA
Reviewed March 19, 2021 (edited October 20, 2021)Revisited this rating after a couple of weeks, and four or five more pours... It's sweeter and more well balanced than when I first tucked in. Tarnished copper, pretty sticky for such a high proof. Lots of slow legs Toast, vanilla, mint, cinnamon, black cherry and a hint of rye funk on the nose. Front of citrus, eucalyptus, cinnamon and balanced with a hint of sweetness mid palate, and a bit of dark honey and coconut. Plenty of heat left behind after the swallow Very woody finish lingers after burnt caramel and clove. Woody/sweet/charry/fruity Opens up nicely with a few drops of water and as it warms up and breathes, the smokey/burnt caramel character grows. Lots going on here, no doubt... But dryer and spicier than I'm inclined to. I think it would be incredible in an old fashioned with molasses bitters and/or maple simple49.99 USD per Bottle -
Michter's US*1 Sour Mash Whiskey
Other Whiskey — Kentucky, USA
Reviewed March 2, 2021 (edited June 24, 2021)Dark copper/amber. Fair number of fast running legs. Nose is a bit hot for the proof, rye jumps out... mint, some baking spices, stone walled basement, vanilla, coconut and dark caramel. Thin mouthfeel, lots of sweetness up front. Sugar cookies, toffee, vanilla frosting and luxardo cherries. Moves quickly on to spice and barrel notes, but retains that sweetness throughout. Shorter finish with the vanilla lingering along with the spices and barrel char. Lacks dimension and depth but it is enjoyable.41.99 USD per Bottle -
Golden straw with copper hue. Quite sticky on the glass with slow, widely spaced legs. Rye noted immediately on nose, with dry oak, some spice, mint and rosemary. Soft, but thin body, warms the palate quickly. spearmint, vanilla and light caramel Finish is mostly wood, lingering spices, a bit of clove and cinnamon, with a bit of brulee. Nothing special, but it's a helluva lot better that I remember it from high school!

Weller Special Reserve Bourbon
Bourbon — Kentucky, USA
Reviewed February 23, 2021 (edited March 25, 2021)Pale copper color, many legs, but slow running. Nose is sugar cookies, vanilla, old dry oak and an ever so faint herbal note. Soft, sweet front moves on to some light spice and a hint of char on the palate. Cloying stickiness allows for a prolonged vanilla frosting finish, with a dash of light caramel, filberts and fuji apple. The wood comes through, but it's really the wood and not the char. It takes a while to unwind it all, and is a joy to let unfold. -
High West A Midwinter Night's Dram
Rye — (bottled in) Utah, USA
Reviewed February 21, 2021 (edited March 25, 2021)Act 8, Scene 2 Ruddy deep amber color with sticky drops. Nose shows a burst of rye Barn funk mixed with juicy ripe fruits and a hint of smoke and eucalyptus. quite complex. Raisin, plum and other sweet fruits with big chest warmth up front. A bright citrus note and spice from the rye on the palate gives way to vanilla and chocolate covered cherries on the exhale. Finish is prunes, dark caramel, mulling spices and split oak with lingering notes of cacao and cigar box with a subtle return of tart fruit. This is big, juicy and complex. Long finish and lots of action. Really glad to be enjoying it at a time when the overnight lows are in the teens here in central VA. -
Bright copper, many thick legs. Plenty of barn funk. A light citrus note, sweet hay, vanilla. Soft mouthfeel, quite warming. Starts sweet but yields to wood quickly. Herbal quality to it in there somewhere mixes with a bit of burnt caramel. A little flat, to be honest. Not bad, just not that exciting.

Elijah Craig Kentucky Straight Rye
Rye — Kentucky, USA
Reviewed February 7, 2021 (edited September 9, 2022)Tarnished amber, moderate stickiness . Nose has lots of spice, mint, green apple and oak. All what one would come to expect from a rye, of course. Front is granny smith apple, then a nice touch of sweetness, then dries out to oak, spice and more tart fruit. Soft, but warming mouthfeel, lots of heat on the palate after the swallow. Clove, cinnamon, mint, and rosemary on the back end, with notes from the wood popping through. Some bitterness and a note of a fresh cardboard box. Not in a bad way, but noted... I like how the mash bill works with the EC wood and char... This works for me as a stand alone, but would make a great old fashioned with a more earthy bitters and a maple or brown sugar simple.32.99 USD per Bottle
