Redneck Riviera Whiskey
Blended American Whiskey — USA
Reviewed December 21, 2019 (edited December 13, 2021)A lot like a basic Canadian whisky—cloying sweetness with lots of grain ethanol on the nose and flavor. Like liquid candy corn. -
Glenmorangie Nectar d'Or Sauternes Cask Finish
Single Malt — Highlands, Scotland
Reviewed December 19, 2019Probably my least favorite of the 4-pak, being sweeter and with a strong white wine bouquet. Doesn’t mean I don’t like this—I do, it’s delicious. I just prefer the other drier barrel finishes. Still a buttery sweet scotch that’s very easy to enjoy. -
McCarthy's Oregon Single Malt
American Single Malt — Oregon, USA
Reviewed December 3, 2019 (edited May 14, 2020)Close your eyes and you’d swear this was a straight up Islay scotch whisky. It’s a bit of a mashup with Islay malt distilled and aged here in Oregon. It’s absolutely amazing. It Tastes much more complex than its 3 year age statement suggests. Definitely worth getting ahold of! -
Highland Park 12 Year Viking Honour
Single Malt — Islands, Scotland
Reviewed December 3, 2019 (edited December 29, 2019)A solid offering from HP. The Orkney peat and sherry cask flavors bounce off each other nicely. Long time fans claim this isnt as good as the pre-viking stuff but I’ve never tasted those. This is a solid malt to my tastes, definitely more happening than a standard highland malt. -
Highland Park 8 Year The MacPhail's Collection (Gordon & MacPhail)
Single Malt — Islands, Scotland
Reviewed December 3, 2019This is different from what you usually get from HP. The usual combo of light orkney peat and sherry with a splash of brine are still there, but they’re tuned back noticeably. Its younger so you’re getting more of the distillery character and straight malt. The nose is very light, but the flavor is much more like a classic highland. Definitely interesting, and worth the $35 I think its close to a younger, lighter HP 12 (Viking’s Honor). -
It’s hard to argue the bang for buck factor here. This has a unique ‘funk’ I’ve picked up in several of TJ’s scotches, but it’s not unpleasant. I usually pick up a couple of these when I’m up in WA. $11 for a full liter ($17 after the state sticks it in without lube) is hard to beat for a basic blend that’ll make a solid scotch n soda everytime. I like it on the rocks or even neat.

Trader Joe's 8 Year Speyside Single Malt Scotch Whisky
Single Malt — Speyside, Scotland
Reviewed November 30, 2019 (edited May 27, 2020)Cant beat this for the price. A bit of bitter oak tannins on top of the classic Speyside profile. This is one of the better of TJ’s scotch offerings along with the blended. -
Whistlepig 10 Year Small Batch Rye
Rye — (bottled in) Vermont, Canada
Reviewed November 26, 2019 (edited July 14, 2020)Probably the best rye whisky I’ve ever tasted. Super flavorful with a burst of rye spice and anise. Of course there’s the caramel and vanilla with a bit of pink peppercorn. Overall its like chewing on a couple caraway seeds. Just a phenomenal whisky. -
Talisker Storm
Single Malt — Islands, Scotland
Reviewed November 24, 2019 (edited December 16, 2019)Briny, coastal , a bit of unique island peat. Really, REALLY tasty scotch. Not quite the peat level of an Islay but it’s there. A damn fine dram!
