Laphroaig PX Cask
Single Malt — Islay, Scotland
Reviewed February 21, 2024 (edited February 26, 2024)Color seems to be getting slightly darker but mostly stabilized. Mostly a mahogany, but a nice deep, dark red in the right light Nose: dried cherries and raisins hit first this time. baking spices, a hint of wood tannin. A bit of sweet maltiness too. Peat and smoke undergird the entirety if the nose. a good oceanic sea spray/seaweed note. Palate: I really do love a sherried Laphroaig, especially this one. A slightly thick/syrupy consistency. Dried/dark fruits, classic Laphroaig peat and smoke are strong. Vanilla, wood spice, sea spray. Earthy sherry. There's a slight sweet fruit note, but it is dark. Putting the super strong Laphroaig malt against a noticably heavy PX influence works well here, two impressively massive flavors. Definitely a sipper. Finish: ashy, decomposing earth, phenolic peat lingers. mild earthy fruit leather. -
Flaviar advent calendar day #17 Nose: vanilla, oak, sourdough. Mildewy grain? Cranberry, corn, some minerality. Buttery graham cracker Palate: spiced and toasty oak. Cinnamon, Brown sugar, significantly spicy. Oily. Pretty fruity but not in a sickly sweet way. More like baked fruit. Some sweet oak too. A hint of petrichor, very strong wood oil notes as it transitions to the finish Finish: oily yet dry, toasted oak and a hint of mint.

Flaviar advent calendar day #16 forgot to take a picture, but the color on this was deep bright Amber. I don't think I've seen a whiskey this color before, it looked unnatural, though it does not taste that way! Nose: cinnamon, clove, orange zest, white pepper, caramel, and oak. The slightest hint of pot still shortbread Palate: sweet. Honey, grain whiskey, butterscotch. It is a tiny bit thin at parts. Very mild oak and a bit of stewed apple. A touch of milk chocolate? Strong vanilla throughout. Cinnamon and wood spice as it transitions to finish Finish: woody. A hint of malt, a bit of metallic astringency, slight honey.

Nose: bright, floral and citrus elements are strong. Candied orange peel/marmalade, sweet malt, macadamia nut. Hint of jasmine. Touch of cinnamon can get a faint peachy note here too. Theres some drying oak notes here too. Coming back with a second glass, getting a substantial creme brulee. Palate: incredibly robust, citrus is present here, a mild earthy sherry. Sweet on the palate. Vanilla and a buttercream element. Candied fruit/berry, almost like a sponge cake with jelly filling and buttercream frosting. Chewy malt, hint of honey, akin to honey nut Cheerios. Theres a mild wood spice element that transitions to the finish and brings with it an ever so slight hint of char and ash. Finish: substantial and relatively long. apple, apricot, aromatic wood spice, mild drying oily element on the middle of the tongue.
