Westward x Ken's Artisan Sourdough Whiskey 2023
American Single Malt — Oregon, USA
Reviewed October 28, 2023Nose: super fruity and initially funky. The funk goes away a tinge as you sit with it. A bit of wood polish. Some malt dank/funk. Sourdough comes out here for sure! A bit of brown sugar. Palate: definitely getting strong barrel notes here, wood tanins come in to balance the sweetness from the mash. Some date, raisin. Has a mellow malt chewiness. Caramel. Slight nuttiness. A hint of green apple? Finish: drying with a tinge of brown sugar sweetness. Warming. -
Nose: sherry, oily, berries and cream? Buttered toast. Sweet vanilla. Palate: fuller bodied and more complex than the 12, which is to be expected at the hugher proof. There is a slight oaky bitterness here that lends a beautiful balance, has a hint of black pepper note too. Honey and fruity notes come through as well as baking spice. Finish: long, a little oily, oaky.84.0 EUR per Bottle

Nose: fruity and a bit funky, sweet smelling. Definitely can smell the aroma of the barley here. Orange marmalade, coconut, baking spices, earthy sherry, and a toasty oak. Palate: fruity and approachable, smooth. Definitely get the sherry here. Honey, malt and spice. A mild toasted oak and butter. Very, very similar to the nose. Finish: sherry, barley sweetness.75.0 USD per Bottle

Laphroaig 7 Year, Reserve Casks, Single Malts of Scotland
Single Malt — Scotland
Reviewed October 11, 2023 (edited October 12, 2023)Nose: Young, potent, initially heavy on dank peat phenols, rubber, iodine and moderate smoke. As you acclimate, bright vanilla, honey, and some oakiness come through. Maybe even some floral and red apple. Possibly some grapefruit peel. Palate: initially heavy and strong on the peat. Brine shows up at the front. This is a dank, oily, wet, peaty dram. Opens a bit to some bitterness and dusty/musty malt. As you acclimate theres a hint of chocolate. The smoke comes out here too complimenting the peaty punch. Mild citrus and honey here potentially too. Oaky tannins come out as it transitions to the finish and also the seawater brininess. Finish: some malt chewiness, peat phenols, oaky tannin, a little tongue numbing. Dry.90.0 USD per Bottle -
Bunnahabhain 12 Year
Single Malt — Islay, Scotland
Reviewed August 29, 2023 (edited December 31, 2023)Nose: sherry comes through immediately, but not in a sickly way. Definitely sweet, but also getting a hint of salinity and earth here as well. A light candied fig? Palate: a sweet and bright start, sherry leads the way with a berries and cream note that leads into an earthy tone. Transitions to a darker oakier note with some caramel as it fills the palate, this is where the salinity comes in. Proof begins to come in a bit here. Mild orange peel. Maybe some baking spice. Finish: tannic oak, a slight rubber from somewhere? Proof sits in the back of the mouth/top of the throat for a minute. -
Nose: light, sweet, and fruity. Whipped cream and tiny vanilla. Honey. Cereal. Fruit tart. Warm, oaky, and buttery as things open up with a hint of the cinnamon. Palate: opens up with a nice sweet honey and cereal, kind of like honey nut cheerios, a little bit of orange, honeysuckle. Classic bright malt notes. Some apple here. As i keep going I see cinnamon and raisin come out a bit more. Transitions to mineral/stone note as it heads towards the finish. It moves from the middle of the tongue to the sides and then coats the whole mouth. Unique! Finish: warming long and lingering. As the warmth fades im left with a very gentle tannic oak and slight minerality.
