I really enjoy a rye that is warmer rather than sweeter and this is certainly that. But I do feel like it misses something in the middle of the body that gives it kind of a funk. It's like 95% amazing but there's some 5% off note that distracts. But still, a great whiskey sipper, though the price may be inflated.

Joseph Magnus Triple Cask Finished Bourbon
Bourbon — (Finished & Bottled in Washington DC), USA
Reviewed April 8, 2026Complex and nice, with an interesting wine-y sweetness but leathery backbone. I usually don't go for Sherry notes, but here it is such a hint that really adds a nice depth. I don't know that I would've paid full price on it, but on sale, this is a fantastic sipper -
Woodford Reserve Double Oaked Bourbon
Bourbon — Kentucky, USA
Reviewed March 31, 2026 (edited June 3, 2026)For some reason I hated this when I first got it. The extra Oak flavor was harsh and blunt. But now that the bottle has sat and breathe for months, it is mellowed out into a beautiful, complex sipper. It is a sweet bourbon, but with some darkness and backbone to it. Dark cherry flavors complimented with almost burnt caramel and some orange zest on it. Whereas before it tasted like a decent bourbon being transported in an oak container, now the flavors melt together well and compliment each other. It's still pretty heavy and thick in the mouth feel, but it really opens up with some water or ice. -
This is a great rye. Really complex with depth. It has a chocolatey sweetness with a bit of leather but also orange peel. There's also a good amount of vanilla and a cherry sweetness. It really does seem to have a bourbon deep bass note while the mid and the highs ring out with a beautiful Rye spice.

Templeton Rye 6 Year
Rye — Indiana (bottled in Iowa), USA
Reviewed February 25, 2026 (edited February 26, 2026)This is a fantastic Rye for both mixing and sipping. It's bright, fresh, and energetic--a good spring whiskey. It's got a strong Rye backbone. But on the front end it has a light sweetness. They're a deep herbal undertones with a light, almost single malt grassiness in the mid-palate. The nose has bits of orange oil and vanilla. There's not a lot of Oak flavor here. The only reason I knock it is that it's a really good and solid and satisfying rye, though not really distinctive. It also has a really wonderful front end and back end, but very little body in the middle, so it can feel a little hollow. Maybe a cask strength version of this would round it out a bit more. -
Tasty sipping whiskey. Probably the highest end I'd consider mixing. Great spice that different than a lot of others, though something send a tad missing in the body. Great initial sip with creaminess and sweetness followed by a really good and herbal spice backbone and finish. But again, the kids are a little flat.FINE WINE & GOOD SPIRITS
