Blanton's Original Single Barrel
Bourbon — Kentucky, USA
Reviewed December 19, 2016 (edited April 24, 2018)Classic, reliable pour. Delicious gourmand nose highlights maple, tobacco and spice. The palate has nice balance of sweetness, heat and spice. Notes of firewood, honey, butterscotch, toasted oak and baking spice fill each sip. The finish echoes coconut, butterscotch and spice, although not overly present. -
Forty Creek Double Barrel Reserve
Canadian — Ontario, Canada
Reviewed December 17, 2016 (edited January 18, 2017)Slightly fruity, sugary nose with hints of maple and vanilla. The palate is well balanced with a tart caramel apple, late spice kick and an herbal backbone. Other notes of sweet vanilla birthday cake, anise, and baking spice rounds out the palate. The finish is the draw of this bottle lingering on the the tongue and in the gums and cheeks with a sweet heat and mellow campfire undertone. -
Buck 8 Year
Bourbon — Kentucky (bottled in California), USA
Reviewed December 13, 2016 (edited December 14, 2016)Coconut macaroon, creme de menthe, vanilla, cherry cobbler and peanut shells on the nose. The palate hits spicy, hot and tight with earthy mint, anise and leather, then slightly tangy fruit notes until ultimately settling into toasty notes of firewood, cocoa, and espresso bean. The finish is long and brings off-sweet notes of dark chocolate sea salt caramel. Really lightens up with an ice cube and tames the heat and sweet. -
Crown Royal Vanilla
Flavored Whiskey — Manitoba, Canada
Reviewed November 23, 2016 (edited April 24, 2018)Vanilla birthday cake batter on the nose. The palate rushes in swetness with a syrupy mouthfeel and notes of vanilla (duh), maple, and marshmallow. The finish is fleeting but leaves a lingering sweetness in the back of your throat. The flavor is tasty, but it's just too sweet save for the transitional whiskey drinker. -
Jack Daniel's Single Barrel Rye
Rye — Tennessee, USA
Reviewed November 23, 2016 (edited April 6, 2017)Surprisingly fruity nose has banana, cranberry, and toasted almond. The palate is absolutely stunning with balance and grace as notes of clove, candied almonds, pistachio, baking spice, peanut shells and ground coffee work in harmony. The finish has good length and resolves with a spicy sweet mix of cinnamon, dried fruits, banana and burt sugar. An ice cube really tames the rugged notes here and focuses more on the sweet and spicy. For me, a must. -
Templeton Rye 4 Year
Rye — Indiana (bottled in Iowa), USA
Reviewed November 23, 2016 (edited November 27, 2016)My favorite and go to rye. I am aware of the controversy, and I don't care. This is delicious. Woodsy and spicy nose leads way to a super smooth palate echoing toasted oak, sea salted caramel, vanilla, clove, brown sugar and subtle spice. The finish is rich with subtle sweetness of toasted marshmallows and creme brulee. My absolute favorite everyday sipper. -
Unique nose of vanilla, spearmint, oak, clove and dried fruit. The palate is a great balance of mouthfeels with good weight yet delicate texture. Herbaceous notes flood the palate leading way to toasty character and smoke creeps in upon swallow. The finish is lengthy, especially for the price and resolves with soft, fruity notes of raisin and toasted almond.
