Nose: Honey. Pear. Taste: Greeted with lightness of honey and pear sweetness. Nice bit of oak with a hint of smoke and spice. Finishes with more smoke and fruity sweetness. Pretty balanced with a solid mouthfeel. Not too heavy but enough to let you know it’s there. The flavor is a bit dainty, and I think I’d prefer a tiny bit more smoke but, overall, it’s great. Light, fruity flavor paired with a solid body makes this scotch a decent one in my book. Curious for some more complexity as I begin to discover more scotches.

Balcones Texas Pot Still Bourbon
Bourbon — Texas, USA
Reviewed December 27, 2020 (edited January 28, 2021)Sweet nose. Heavy vanilla and a bit of corn. Tasting starts with vanilla and opens into more sweet corn and some sort of grain. Light baking spices finish into almost a semi sweet chocolate. Overall a great bourbon. I don’t like my bourbons too sweet so this one is great. I wouldn’t say it is smooth, necessarily, but at 92 proof it’s still great. Second Balcones whiskey I’ve had and it will not be the last. -
Four Roses Small Batch Bourbon
Bourbon — Kentucky, USA
Reviewed February 4, 2020 (edited February 7, 2020)Classic Bourbon. When I think of Bourbon, I think of this. It’s just plain good bourbon with no funny business. Smell is tough to place for me. Seems a bit spice forward with light fruit notes. Bit of cinnamon with some nutmeg. Traditional cinnamon and caramel flavors you expect in a bourbon with some sweet honey and fruit notes. Not sure if I love the after taste or not, but it’s heavy on honey and sticks around quite a bit. But other than that, it checks all the “bourbon boxes”. Slam dunk of a go-to bourbon for me. -
This is one of my first true Islay scotch’s and wow this was punch in the face. Super smoky and super peaty. Almost overtaking, but I can’t stop drinking it. Described to my fiance as “tastes like I’m eating a campfire”. I’ve got some light pear notes that become more prominent, not only in taste but also in smell. Intriguing and already growing on me only halfway through a glass. I’ll have to revisit this for sure.

On the nose: Orange and oak with a bit of vanilla. Sipping: I tried this one with a single ice cube that melted into it. I pull a strong sweet corn flavor and a lot of oak as well. It finishes with more oak, a little bit of citrus and some spice. My roommate bought this but hated it. I think for $11 this is a great, no BS bourbon! Been sipping on Evan Williams single barrel recently and this competes well. I almost like this more. Probably updates to come.

Big fan of this. Nose: I’m getting a lot of dark fruit notes like cherry. Hard for me to pick out anything else specifically. Sipping: Ver full taste. Not so light as other Irish Whisky’s I’ve tried. Dark fruits again, but a little more citrusy. The fruitiness is nice. The flavor profile is deeper than I can figure out right now but I’m excited to continue exploring this one.

Incredibly smooth whisky with a simple, forward flavor profile. On the nose its VERY maple syrup forward. Light carmel. Sipping, I get a lot of maple and some carmel, almost a butterscotch or toffee note. Only gripe is that I wish it was a bit stronger than 80 proof but, that being the only thing, this is a great canadian whisky in general, and even better for the price.
