Springbank 17 Year Madeira Wood
Single Malt — Campbelltown , Scotland
Reviewed September 15, 2023 (edited September 16, 2023)On the nose I get some berries, pound cake, a salted caramel, and generally a lot of influence from the wine. Palate is a little more all over the place, with some prune, dates, caramel, balsamic, and something a little herbal on the finish. Through that a light wisp of smoke persists in the background. The nose on this is great, and it's got a pretty nice, thick mouthfeel despite being "only" 48-ish abv. Reading reviews on it, it seems I like this more than most, although it I suspect the price influenced peoples' perception (although Local Barley costs just as much now...). -
Ballechin 2009 11 Year (The Ultimate)
Single Malt — Highland, Scotland
Reviewed September 14, 2023 (edited September 15, 2023)r/scotch selection. Just killed the bottle... Sweet peat, pear, caramel on the nose. Peat, bbq palate, fruity, earthy, a little hot. Finish a little dry and bitter, with some dark fruits in the background. Has some interesting flavors that make me want to keep coming back to it, but definitely benefits from a few drops of water. -
Wild Common Tequila Reposado
Tequila Reposado — Tequila Valley, Jalisco, Mexico
Reviewed September 13, 2023 (edited September 15, 2023)The nose really reminds me of the desert after rain - wet creosote, minerals. The barrel is in the background, and the agave is very much in control - there are some vegetal notes, herbs, parsley, with a little eathier finish. The short time in the barrel adds just a hint of caramel. The nose is what really shines here. -
Don Fulano Reposado Tequila
Tequila Reposado — Tequila Valley, Jalisco, Mexico
Reviewed September 11, 2023 (edited December 27, 2023)This one has a somewhat funky nose for a tequila - almost a bit of a raicilla essence. Raisin, licorice, hint of cheese, hint of Belgian dark ale. On the palate there's some licorice, brine, clove, cola. Some similar flavors to the blanco, but a little fruitier and more subdued. Finish has some wintergreen and ethanol, some pepper. Compared to the blanco, I thought the nose was the biggest difference, but I think I preferred the blanco on that aspect... so while I enjoy this, I would recommend the (cheaper) blanco over it. -
Cazcanes No. 7 Reposado
Tequila Reposado — Tequila Valley, Jalisco, Mexico
Reviewed September 11, 2023Some vanilla and caramel on the nose, but after airing it's a bit earthier with a bit of pepper. The palate is initially butterscotch and custard, but then it gradually gets a little grassy, transitioning to a comparatively dry finish with black pepper and a touch of dark fruit. Approachable, feels like a dessert drink, but doesn't completely abandon the agave. -
Código 1530 Añejo Tequila
Tequila Añejo — Jalisco, Mexico
Reviewed September 8, 2023 (edited September 15, 2023)Dark fruit and butterscotch aromas, noticeably oakier than the repo. Fruity palate, some butterscotch and cinnamon, with a more chocolatey, oaky finish. It's quite nice, but not enough to justify the high price compared to the repo (or ArteNOM 1146, which also ages in wine barrels).127.0 USD per Bottle -
Código 1530 Reposado Tequila
Tequila Reposado — Jalisco, Mexico
Reviewed September 8, 2023 (edited September 9, 2023)Aromas of vanilla custard, dark fruit, agave. Slight ethanol. Palate has agave and citrus, with a bit of caramel. The finish has more influence from the cab barrel, with some tannins, chocolate, dark fruit, and some orange pith. This is a nice unique repo, but could be a touch better integrated.68.0 USD per Bottle -
Código 1530 Blanco Tequila
Tequila Blanco — Jalisco, Mexico
Reviewed September 8, 2023 (edited September 9, 2023)Initially has aromas of mint and citrus, with the citrus dominating after some air. Vegetal agave on the palate, with a bit of mint and pepper on the finish. For similar notes to El Tesoro, but this is somewhat cleaner. Pretty unremarkable, but a perfectly serviceable blanco depending on the circumstances.47.0 USD per Bottle -
Cask #48. 58% abv. Ex-bourbon. Mouthfeel is great, oily, fruity nose, caramel apple. Hot, hot, hot. If I had to guess the distillery, I'd go with Mortlach. Waxy, apple, cinnamon. Finish is a bit grainy and dominated by ethanol so probably on the younger side, but there's definitely a lot of barrel influence. This would be outstanding if it weren't so hot.16.0 USD per Pour

Fortaleza Blanco Still Strength Tequila
Tequila Blanco — Tequila Valley, Jalisco, Mexico
Reviewed August 24, 2023 (edited September 15, 2023)Wasn't sold on Fortaleza Blanco, but was told the Still Strength is where it's at. Local bar got stocked with the full range so decided to take advantage. Aromas of sweet agave, a little vegetal, but pleasant. Tropical fruit on the palate, herbs, pepper, beautifully thick mouthfeel, with a long finish with mint and olive brine. Beats the hell out of the regular Blanco in my opinion, but doesn't quite reach the heights Fuentaseca does (but this used to be like $75/bottle).
