Shieldaig 18 Year Speyside Single Malt
Single Malt — Speyside, Scotland
Reviewed August 14, 2020 (edited September 18, 2022)The nose is quite harsh - it kinda reminds me of something like JW red to black label, strong alcohol and some fruit and honey sweetness but overall not very pleasant The aromas set my expectations low but on palate it is better than expected. Smooth, vanilla, caramel, honey, stone fruit and leather. The finish is sweet with vanilla. -
A delightful Ardbeg dram. The aromas start with the typical Ardbeg peat with some smoke, but quickly the elegant sweetness of wine cask, that from fortified red wines, comes into presence. The palate is complex with lots of nuts and roasted oak. Some vanilla complements the peat and smoke. Extremely smooth texture and oily too that cover your tongue thoroughly. The finish is roasted nuts and some fruity sweetness. Overall a really nice Ardbeg Feis Ile release that beat most the previous years’ ones.200.0 USD per Bottle

Straight up: The aromas are at first very juniper forward. But quickly floral notes and lemongrass kicked in. It is very pleasant and approachable with low level of alcohol choke. On palate it again started with juniper, followed by some grassy and citrus notes. The texture is more oily and richer than most gins. Mandarin orange surprisingly pops up during the finish with some pepper and citrus in the background. With fever tree tonic: Such a great combination. The fruity and slightly grassy flavours fuse perfectly with the tonic to give a pleasant and refreshing long drink. The overall sweetness increases which highlights the fruity flavours more. At the price point of USD40 per litre this is a great addition to any bar shelves.40.0 USD per Bottle

On nose peaty (of course), vanilla, charcoal and some fruit peel. There is also a strange smell of steel and tap water though. On palate it starts with some vanilla sweetness, then dominated by the peat flavours. From swallow to finish it is quite bland, with grass and again the steely and tap water notes coming out from the throat. Very light weight and body. I would have preferred Ardbeg 10 for a young and grassy Ardbeg, and a Uigeadail for a flavourful and sweet peat one.

On nose it has some unroasted cashews and fresh apples and pears. A hint of salt and oak. On palate the nuts continue, but have some vegetable notes and a bit smoky too. Light in flavours, but rich in texture. The finish is medium length of tobacco. A decent surprise at the quality of this relatively affordable bottle. Definitely recommended for your shelf for a light but flavourful speyside.

Connemara 12 Year Peated Single Malt
Single Malt — Ireland
Reviewed May 13, 2020 (edited July 30, 2020)Very intense aromas of many things - floral, seaweed, peat, pear, it is multidimensional but a bit too perfumed. On palate, honey, coal, coffee and smoke come out along with those flavours we got in the aromas. It is overall sweet but it has some darker elements that make it tastes a bit more mature. The finish is dark chocolate with coal. This is quite an interesting whisky with many flavours, but I may prefer something more harmonic and balanced. -
Powers John's Lane Release 12 Year
Single Pot Still — Ireland
Reviewed May 13, 2020 (edited January 3, 2021)The nose is a lot of fruit like apricot and apples. A clear vanilla note as well. On palate it is smooth and sweet. The sweet is one of fruit juice - like apple juice. Along with some peaches and mangoes in it. The finish is relatively short but a pleasant in cream and apples.
