Pepper, smoke, moss, horseradish. Hints of mustard. Earthy peat with rolling waves of dry smoke - lingering like fog. Iron, metallic earth. Quite a decent amount of salt and brine. Great smokey whiskey, but not enough layers or complexity to the smoke for me to give it a 5. Still, it'll always be welcome on my shelf and in my mouth.

Rebel Yell Kentucky Straight Bourbon (Discontinued)
Bourbon — Kentucky, USA
Reviewed November 12, 2018Sweet and mild. Not overly complex but pretty pleasant, and affordable. -
Sweet smokey, but balanced, nose with a surprising amount of sherry and fruit. Sweet fruity smoke, followed by a definite treacle wave - caramel and butterscotch notes that evolve into dry wood with smokey notes. The smoke and treacle are perfectly melded. This is perfect on it's own, but would make a phenomenal pairing with the right desert.

Woody, smokey nose. Mild, dry smoke to start which builds slightly over time. Earthy, vegetal peat with moderate brine/salt. Kind of like Laphroaig's kid brother, but in a mostly good way. Some citrus. A lot here, but a subtle and subdued, perhaps a little too subtle and subdued. Flavors evolve with time, but come and go like the tides. Perhaps it would be better if it were cask strength or 43-46 instead of 40.

Angel's Envy Bourbon Finished in Port Wine Barrels
Bourbon — Kentucky, USA
Reviewed November 8, 2018 (edited November 19, 2018)Softer and more delicate than I expected. Rye spiciness mixed with sweet notes from the port - the port taste is definitely there, mixed in. Short dry finish with port moving to a long dry spicy/port finish. -
Highland Park Valknut
Single Malt — Islands, Scotland
Reviewed November 6, 2018 (edited March 13, 2020)A bit of smoke and peat on the nose. Moderate smoke burn, salt with a dry pepper finish mingled with smoke. More of the standard Highland Park signature flavor comes through than in Valkyrie, but it still isn't as robust as in the 12 year. Good, enjoyable entry, but I still prefer 12 over this. I prefer this over Valkyrie, but still a fine whiskey in its own right. -
Angel's Envy Rye Finished in Caribbean Rum Casks
Rye — USA
Reviewed November 6, 2018 (edited November 10, 2019)Luxurious, sweet, spicy nose with strong alcohol. Sweet rich taste, full mouth feel with spicy rye and sweet strong sugarcane/Rum notes. Whiskey candy. Smells absolutely amazing, and tastes pretty nice. I'd be perfectly content to just inhale this all night without actually drinking it.
