Ole Smoky Blackberry Moonshine
Other Spirits — Tennessee, USA
Reviewed November 30, 2020 (edited January 5, 2021)It’s got a pleasant-enough blackberry aroma, and it’s only 40 proof, so it doesn’t smell like blackberry cough syrup. It doesn’t really taste like cough syrup, either, unlike the company’s Hunch Punch Lightnin’. That being said, it’s not very interesting at all, just a little blackberry and a little alcohol. I’d rather sip the company’s White Lightnin’. $3.29 for a 50 ml sample mason jar at Total Wine & More.3.29 USD per BottleTotal Wine & More -
Ole Smoky Hunch Punch Moonshine
Other Spirits — Tennesssee, USA
Reviewed November 30, 2020 (edited January 27, 2022)It smells like fruit punch cough syrup. It tastes even more like fruit punch cough syrup. It gets a bit better with a few more sips, though. I love sweet liqueurs, but this just tastes too much like cough syrup to be very enjoyable. I’ll drink it, but I won’t be buying a full-size bottle. I like the company’s plain White Lightnin’ much better. $2.99 for a 50 ml sample mason jar at Total Wine & More.2.99 USD per BottleTotal Wine & More -
Ole Smoky Tennessee Moonshine Original
White — Tennessee, USA
Reviewed November 30, 2020 (edited October 29, 2024)My first moonshine! It’s got an aroma similar to rubbing alcohol, but it’s more pleasant than that. I was expecting significant alcohol burn given that it’s 100 proof, but it’s surprisingly smooth, with very little burn. After a few sips, a nice warmth shows up in the throat. I really thought I wouldn’t like this, but it’s got a good flavor and is nice to sip. $3.29 for a 50 ml sample mason jar at Total Wine & More.3.29 USD per BottleTotal Wine & More -
1921 Crema de Tequila is a cream liqueur, like Bailey’s, but made with a tequila blanco base instead of whiskey. It tastes like cream, with a hint of cinnamon, and then the tequila flavor shows up. Whether or not you’ll like it depends on how fond you are of the vegetal taste of tequila. It’s okay, but when I want a cream liqueur I much prefer Bailey’s or Buffalo Trace Bourbon Cream.27.99 USD per BottleTotal Wine & More

Kahlúa is what everyone thinks of when you mention coffee liqueur. The aroma isn’t as rich as that of Café Granita, but the taste is mellower. It’s very tasty sipped neat, over the rocks, in mixed drinks, in coffee, or even over ice cream. It’s now apparently a mixture of rum and coffee liqueur, with a lower percentage of alcohol, and sadly isn’t as good as it used to be two or three decades ago. I’ll have to try Kahlúa Especial to see if it’s even better.18.99 USD per BottleCostco Wholesale

Café Granita has a much stronger, richer coffee aroma than Kahlúa. It’s also got a stronger, although perhaps harsher, coffee flavor. Sampling them neat, side by side, I sometimes prefer the stronger flavor of Café Granita, and sometimes the mellower flavor of Kahlúa. If you’re looking for something to mix into a cocktail, Café Granita may actually be preferable.13.65 USD per BottleTotal Wine & More

Buffalo Trace Bourbon Cream
Dairy/Egg Liqueurs — Kentucky , USA
Reviewed October 19, 2020 (edited December 17, 2021)It’s a wonderful cream liqueur. Think Bailey’s but with the taste of bourbon. It’s sweet, of course, but not overly so. The balance between the cream and the bourbon is just right.18.99 USD per BottleTotal Wine & More
