High West Rendezvous Rye
Rye — (bottled in) Utah, USA
Reviewed June 29, 2018 (edited October 12, 2018)2014 batch. Smells soapy, robust. Strong floral notes, some dill, brown sugar. Classic rye profile but maybe more intense. Ends with slight wood notes, pecan shells, and Sprite. If you like rye, this is a good one -
Have had this before, but I had to try this again after having the Parker's Wheat. Actually, the nose is similar. Obviously not as intense, but ish. And pleasant in its own right. Deep honey. On the palate, it starts off like the Parker's but that ends pretty quickly, and likewise the finish is short. There's a similar honey note, but this definitely is not as intense or deep, and unfortunately it's more bitter than I was expecting. It feels creamy. There's a hint of vanilla on the nose but none on the palate. Some herbal notes. Bravo for the addition of an age statement, but this seems younger than 7 years. I understand this is going to suffer in comparison to the Parker's, but I think even if I hadn't had the Parker's front of mind, I wouldn't be thrilled with this. 6/27/18

St. George Baller Single Malt Whisky
American Single Malt — California, USA
Reviewed June 27, 2018 (edited February 16, 2021)This doesn't smell like whisky, the plum wine influence is immediately obvious. That fruity sweet note is mixed with peat. So this smells like... hospital bathroom soap. Viscous on the tongue, this is thick. Perhaps the thickest whisky I've ever had. The sweet note hits up front, but the fruity hospital note dominates. That being said, I'm trying hard to hate it, but I don't. I probably won't drink it again, but it's interesting and not off putting, even for someone like me who dislikes, or at best barely tolerates, peat. Definitely unique. Some people are going to love this. 6/27/18 -
Classic and wonderful nose; not overly complex, just good. Vanilla, caramel, baking spice, some Juicy Fruit. Palate follows suit, with even more baking spice. Smooth, with a nice spice to the end, and a lingering slight okay bitterness. The Juicy Fruit makes a reappearance at the end. Creamy mouthfeel. Nice hug, surprising for the proof. 6/19/18

Coopers' Craft Original 82.2 Proof Kentucky Straight Bourbon
Bourbon — Kentucky, USA
Reviewed June 16, 2018 (edited December 26, 2019)Smells great, honey, sugar, sour ale, apple cider, wood. Smooth on the tongue, although prickly on the back of the throat. Some sweetness, slight char, pears, nutmeg. Bitter zest lingers in the throat. Great intro bourbon, or a nice change-of-pace sipper. 6/16/18 -
Knob Creek Cask Strength Straight Rye (2018 Release)
Rye — Kentucky, USA
Reviewed June 10, 2018 (edited June 13, 2018)Thin nose initially. Opens up a little, some fresh linens, sandalwood, must, and... tomatoes? Maybe some Juicy Fruit gum. Palate is interesting, some young corn notes. Some nutmeg, oak, and slight bitterness. Mint and spice linger in a surprisingly long finish that gets dry after a while. -
Woodford Reserve Master's Collection Batch Proof 125.8
Bourbon — Kentucky, USA
Reviewed June 10, 2018Great, classic nose - vanilla, cinnamon, zest. On the palate, baking spice and oak. Pleasant sweetness. Slight astringency (a Woodford characteristic). Prominent Kentucky hug that lingers along with a bitter note. Solid, but retail price is steep. -
Some must and then bourbon notes, based on the nose I wouldn't guess this to be a young rye. That comes on the palate though, definitely a youngeye, but actually pretty good. Slightly thin. Mild, nothing too harsh, some pleasant floral notes, vanilla, baking spice, a hint of cola and herbs at the end. Mild bitterness lingers a bit. Surprising, but I think the price point will hold it back a bit. It does make me interested in the cask strength version. 6/9/18
