Subtle Booker’s peanut flavor that mellows out quickly to full, spicy flavors. It’s nice to see this and Donahoe’s stray away from the extreme peanut flavors from last year’s batches. Definitely a spicier bookers, but not in a bad way.
I haven't had this yet and probably won't since my guess and based on reactions is this one isn't close to 21-01. That bottle is fantastic. What I am here to say is, I belive Bookers as a brand needs a revamp. Not so much in packaging but in batching and distribution. The main reason I stay away from Bookers most of the time is I love when things are complete. I can't keep up with all these releases. I think they need a spring and fall release and just have more of it. That way there is more time to get it right. Even if that means the distribution of Bookers is suspended for 2 years. Let those stocks age make Bookers at least 8 years old minimum and have 2 per year. Dont make it an LE do what Stagg jr does and you will find more acclaim.
I love bookers. The 2018-03 got me started on my bourbon journey. This new batch is so off-profile and…wrong. Its bitter with the taste of ethanol, but no real heat. Not much peanut, I’d say weak cinnamon and strange herbal notes on the finish.
The price increases and the hit or miss batching is literally killing bookers as a brand. Looks like its back to knob creek for me…
Nose: lots of spice on this one. Nutty as well. Caramel and fruit after letting it breathe for a minute.
Palate: Kentucky hug with some boldness. Also very oily and nutty. Good amount of rye shining through. Not a bad batch but I’ve had better being a huge Booker’s fan. Definitely drinks below its proof though which is very nice.
Finish: unique for Booker’s. Lots of rye in this finish. Medium length.
Overall: good, decent batch. Hate the price increase but I love Booker’s. This is the first batch I’ve tasted since 2018 but I have all the named batches! I probably would not get multiples of this one but it’s good.
Another solid entry into the Booker’s line. Initially sweet on the tongue (especially for a high proofer) with vanilla and raw sugar notes. Then fills in with cinnamon and pepper after a bit and then a trace of peanuts before a fairly mellow finish. Any lingering spice remains on the tongue. There is virtually no “Kentucky hug” down the throat at all. Might be a tad pricey, but certainly not sorry I bought it.
