Nose - to me, it smells at first similar to a familiar Jim Beam nutty vanilla note, but then spices are introduced, almost cinnamon. Taste - it’s really mellow at first before you swallow, but then it kind of explodes into a spice-y mouth feel (which I like). Before you swallow, it’s a little bit oily too, which is nice. Adding a little bit of water makes the follow through more mellow, but doesn’t affect the initial taste much. I bet it’s kind of nice on the rocks. Follow through - it sticks around for a good while, works it’s way down the throat for a nice whiskey burn (which is nice sometimes, but a lot of the time I’m not in the mood for that much) Overall - I saw this in a store for the first time and it was for a good price, so I had to get it. Didn’t expect to like it much, since I’m not a fan of Buffalo trace so far. It’s definitely a better whiskey than Buffalo trace, I can say that for sure, it’s more complex and unique, BUT it does have some very similar notes to Buffalo trace. I’m not sure what it is that I don’t like in it, but there’s this one note that just tastes bitter to me. I like the spice-y follow through, and how smooth and oily the initial taste is. That makes it unique. I’m glad got to taste it, but for how rare it is, and how much everyone always talks about it, I wasn’t quite blown away. Really cool packaging and cool looking bottle though, and it’s nice to have it.45.0 USD per BottleFort Worth

Woodford Reserve Double Oaked
Bourbon — Kentucky, USA
Reviewed July 26, 2020 (edited August 10, 2020)Second time tasting this. Just confirmed that I’m going to buy a full bottle. I love it! I taste and smell the oakiness in it from the double maturation. Notes on tasting are chocolate, oak, caramel, and a little bit of a citrusy flavor, almost like an orange cream that would go on a cake or something. I love how smooth it is, I hardly get any alcohol burn. Since there’s no burn, when it first hits my tongue, it’s like I’m drinking chocolate milk, because the chocolate is the first bite that I taste, and with it being whiskey it feels like a more syrupy liquid. Very interesting. I am drinking it now with an ice mold, which is melting pretty slowly, but in the future, I think this is best drank neat, since it’s so smooth and complex already. It’s super sweet (which I usually don’t love) but not too sweet, and is just a full tasting whiskey. There’s not much of a follow through, but that’s fine, just makes me want to drink more haha. -
Dear god, this is terrible. I feel like I have a stomach ache from just drinking one sip of it. The nose is way too obnoxious. We get the point... it’s an apple flavored whiskey. The taste is so syrupy. It’s so concentrated and sweet, there’s also this musty note to it. I literally couldn’t bring myself to take another sip of it. I know that this is a flavored whiskey and that I wouldn’t like it, but wow... it’s bad. If you’re looking for a better version of this that is actually a complex whiskey, try Clyde May’s Alabama Style Whiskey

I like this enough, but there’s not that much to it in my opinion. The low proof makes it a pretty drinkable bourbon. I wish I would have tried this when I had just started drinking whiskey, I probably would have liked it a bit more. Nose smells like brown sugar and light chocolate. Not much ethanol burn Taste is typical bourbon. Vanilla, caramel, brown sugar... to me it almost tastes like Jim Beam white, but less sweet and syrup-y. It doesn’t have a ton going on in it. No complaints at all though! Probably goes well in cocktails or over rocks.

Belfour Bourbon Whiskey Finished with Texas Pecan Wood
Bourbon — USA
Reviewed July 20, 2020 (edited March 12, 2021)I bought this not expecting much other than just being curious if the pecan staves actually added something unique to the bourbon. The nose is really great! Not super strong, but I get notes of caramel, nuttiness, and some oak. Really a fan of the nose. The palate is pretty dynamic actually! It starts out with a classic bourbon taste, and I am surprised that there is definitely a pecan note in this! It’s got a really rich nutty-ness to it. Other initial notes are caramel, brown sugar, vanilla etc... as soon as you open your mouth or start swallowing, it becomes a spice bomb, with a follow through that feels similar to Four Roses to me. A little bit of cinnamon and rye spice on the follow through. Some gripes about it. I don’t think I will want to drink multiple glasses of this in a row, it can feel a little thin, and there is a little bit of bitterness every now and then that I’m not loving. It’s super expensive. I bought a 200ml bottle for $25. Probably wouldn’t buy a full 750 ml bottle of it. Overall, I’m glad I tried this. It’s got a very definite journey of flavors that it takes you through each sip. Starts out tasting almost like a wheated bourbon, and the follow through almost resembles a rye. Very interesting experience, and it is pretty unique that you actually can pick out a pecan/nutty note in it. -
Balcones Texas Single Malt
American Single Malt — Texas, USA
Reviewed July 15, 2020 (edited August 29, 2020)Nose - smokey fruits, super smooth, no alcohol burn. Oddly enough, I get a slight smell of fruity bubble gum, and raisins as well. Taste - This is one of my favorite single malt scotch-like whiskey that I have had to date. I am definitely a fan of the proof (106) for this one, it really helps out the flavors and complexities in the taste. Definitely a full feeling whiskey. Tasting notes are dark fruits, rye spice, and the previously mentioned sweet bubble gum. One last tasting note that I can't quite pin down almost tastes like subtle chocolate to me, and it is most present at the follow through mostly. Follow through - Really like the mouth feel, and the lingering "burn" if that's even what I should call it. It coats the tongue nice, and leaves a nice aftertaste. It leaves me feeling nice and warm. All in all, this whiskey made me excited, as I haven't been a huge fan of many single malts so far in my whiskey journey. But drinking this makes me want to go try out some other single malt scotches and see if my tastes have changed. I don't recommend adding any water to this, it definitely got rid of all of the complexity, but I bet some whiskey stones with this could be pretty enjoyable. I definitely could enjoy having a full bottle of this someday. Balcones is the best, I've really liked everything from them that I have tasted so far.
