High West Rendezvous Rye
Rye — (bottled in) Utah, USA
Reviewed April 5, 2019 (edited August 13, 2019)Neat. Nose is high rye (as expected) and leans towards the black licorice side. It is incredibly oily on the glass. Extremely smooth and pleasant mouth feel. Buttery on the tongue initially, that’s interesting. Dill initially but couldn’t find it later. It’s really good. Lots of vanilla, dessert like quality. It’s something specific I can’t put my finger on it. A spicy custard maybe? Solid stuff. -
Smooth Ambler Old Scout 107 Proof American Whiskey
Blended American Whiskey — Indiana and Tennessee (Bottled in West Virginia), USA
Reviewed April 5, 2019 (edited September 17, 2019)Neat. Not too much on the nose. Butterscotch and some floral notes with some searching. Nice mouth feel with immediate brown sugar on the tongue. Transitions to vanillas and spice. Nutty. Very smooth and mild for a 107 proof. Legs don’t last too long. It’s good, not great. No offending characteristics, nothing blows me away. Just a solid sipper all around. -
Redbreast 12 Year Cask Strength
Single Pot Still — Ireland
Reviewed April 3, 2019 (edited July 13, 2019)Neat. Delightful nose. Buttery. A bread like quality. Nice creamy mouth feel. Tons of flavor, misleading off the nose. Hits you with a lot of spice. Very savory flavors. Nice long legs. Irish Whiskey capable of more than I knew! -
New Riff Kentucky Straight Rye Bottled In Bond
Rye — Kentucky , USA
Reviewed April 1, 2019 (edited May 7, 2019)Neat. Delightful. Heavy rye on the nose. I get marshmallow, mint, floral. Very little alcohol on the nose too. Outside of maybe Willet, this is one of the best noses on a rye I can recall. Nice creamy palate. Hit of pepper on the palate transitions to some vanilla and spice. The vanilla and spice linger. There is a buttery quality to it as well. One of my favorite Ryes. On the spot I would put it right behind Willet as my favorite. I’ll have to test this blind in the future. -
Angel's Envy Cask Strength Bourbon Finished in Port Wine Barrels (2018 Edition)
Bourbon — Kentucky, USA
Reviewed March 29, 2019Neat. Vanilla. Raisins. Baking spice and chocolate on the nose. Cherries. Lots going on. Creamy texture, chocolate on the tongue. Lots of vanilla, cherries, cinnamon, cola. That is super tasty. The legs are an overwhelming flavor bomb. That vanilla and cola just linger forever. Really impressed. It was too damn expensive... but I am not disappointed. -
Booker's Bourbon Batch 2019-01 "Teresa's Batch"
Bourbon — Kentucky, USA
Reviewed March 28, 2019 (edited July 14, 2019)Neat. Peanut Butter. The nose is like opening up a jar of peanut butter. Syrupy mouth feel, spice on the palate. More peanut butter. Going to let this sit and see if I can get passed the peanut butter. Nope. Peanut Butter. Non-stop. It’s delicious for what it does. Unique among the Booker’s line. Not in love with it but enjoying it. -
Neat. Good amount of ethanol on the nose. Once you get past that the flavors are medium to dark on the nose. Lots of spice. Oak. I would call it fruit, maybe a beat. It’s hearty. Nice syrupy thickness, pepper and caramel on the palate immediately. It’s hot at first on the swallow but gives way to those hearty flavors and transitions to tons of spiced vanilla. The legs are delicious and the best part. That vanilla and spice hangs for a solid minute. Very solid all around.

Neat. Corn corn corn. Like corn in the fall while in a pumpkin patch corn maze. What a strange mouth feel. It’s syrupy with almost a thick grainy quality. The grainy texture is like sugar on the palate. The taste is more corn. Corn corn corn. The legs remind me a lot of Mash #1 White Dog. It’s interesting and drinkable but not something I will want again to just sip on. I imaging pulling this out to show an extreme end of the bourbon taste profile.

Knob Creek Single Barrel Select Rye
Rye — Kentucky, USA
Reviewed March 26, 2019 (edited January 18, 2022)Neat. Uncorked store pick. Need to try it again. Did a blind test taste against Old Forrester Rye so no tasting notes. The OF was way ahead on flavor and even bite. I was confident I like the Knob better until the reveal. It was still really good but a more standard Rye profile compared to OF.
