Old Forester 100 Proof Bourbon
Bourbon — Kentucky, USA
Reviewed August 19, 2020 (edited September 12, 2020)First taste wasn’t as good as after I let it breath a few minutes, and aroma is also better and sweeter with time. The warmth and mint lingers on the tongue. It would probably make a good Mint Julip. -
Tasted it with Maker’s Mark as the second sample. These wheated bourbons have a fairly similar profile. Both of are readily available, were as Weller is scarce and Pappy’s is definitely rare. IMO Larceny is oilier, spicer, fuller bodied than Maker’s and not as sweet. But like Maker’s better. Prefer serving Larceny as what I call a “Basil Bluegrass”. Makes 2 drinks: muddle 1/2oz Pallini Limoncello, juice from 1/2 lemon, 1 sugar cube, stem of 6-8 basil leaves, then shake w/ ice & 5oz Larceny. Strain and serve on ice, garnish w/ basil and lemon. You’ll like it;)

Very Old Barton 100 Proof Bourbon
Bourbon — Kentucky, USA
Reviewed August 6, 2020 (edited September 20, 2020)Since it has become a challenge to find “good” bourbons I jumped down to the bottom shelf and bought Very Old Barton (VOB) for 3 reasons: it’s owned by Sazerac who also owns Buffalo Trace distillery, expert rating is 86, and low risk at only $28 for 1.75L. Did a tasting of VOB and 1792 since both are typically available, and IMO have similar profiles. VOB is rather subdue for 100 proof bourbon, has less of a spicy kick, less smoke, less sweetness, and less caramel flavor than 1792. Adding drops of water to both bourbons provides more depth, smoother finish and opens up the flavor. Surprised to say VOB is almost as good as 1792 and at 40% less $ it’s a bargain. Try it as Old Fashioned w/ maple syrup, angostura, and orange- it’s pretty damn good! -
Beefeater London Dry Gin (47%)
London Dry Gin — England
Reviewed July 5, 2020 (edited August 9, 2023)Good option for most cocktails, makes a good dirty martini, since flavors are fairly subdued and versatile. -
El Jimador Reposado Tequila
Tequila Reposado — Tequila Valley, Jalisco, Mexico
Reviewed July 5, 2020My go to tequila for margs and palomas; rich and smooth flavor. Who needs over advertised and over priced patron or herradura;)32.0 USD per Bottle -
It’s good, mild, easy sipper, sweet but fairly well balanced, not a mouthful of flavor...verging on simple. Comparing with Weller SR, and Turkey 101 (which are comparably priced); I’d say Weller is my favorite “standalone”, BT is my favorite with drops of water or couple cubes of ice, and WT101 is fav as an Old Fashioned.
