Nose is on the funky side with bananas and burnt sugar and everything else you'd expect of a Jamaican rum. Nose also has a hint of oaked vanilla. Taste initially hits you with the sweetness but the hogo ramps up through the middle. Ends up a bit like canned pineapple. Has a bit of funk that reminds me of tequila, too. A pretty flavorful white rum!

St. George Spiced Pear Liqueur
Fruit Liqueurs — California, USA
Reviewed December 6, 2020 (edited July 11, 2022)It smells and tastes like a nicely spiced pear. Reasonable cinnamon and allspice without going overboard, with a thick and nectary mouthfeel. Mix it with an Irish whiskey to drink a scone with nice fall flavors. -
Nose is very rum-like: overripe bananas, sugarcane, along with some notes I associate with amazake and some twice-cooked crusty rice. Taste hits me out from left field. Starts off slightly smokey, a bit briny, very BBQ-like but more akin to an Asian BBQ sauce instead of one we're used to in the western palate. Reminded me most of this BBQ "sauce" made with fried dried shrimp. Also detected some dried loquat in there, along with vegetal, Asian salted and preserved greens in there. Finally, finishes bizarrely like a funky rum. It's overall very rummy, except everything in the middle which is a huge adventure. Very interesting!

Nose: burnt marshmallows, green bananas, and sugarcane. Taste: mostly mashed bananas with that freshly opened banana peel note, followed by toasty marshmallows and sugarcane juice. It's great in tiki but it's also great by a fire. Every time I have the Smith & Cross, I wind up craving s'mores. Usually either my #1 or #2 rum.

Kavalan Concertmaster Port Cask Finish Single Malt
Single Malt — Taiwan
Reviewed November 20, 2020 (edited May 13, 2021)Nose is combination of bright tropical fruits like papaya and mango, along with taffy-like sweetness and deep port prune notes. Palate is very fruity, mostly of banana and a very prominent and lingering ripe papaya. Has a bit of a bitter, drying finish to it. Not flavors I'm used to getting out of single malts. Very nice! -
Appleton Estate Signature Blend Rum
Gold Rum — Jamaica
Reviewed November 18, 2020 (edited December 5, 2020)Nose is of chocolate and toffee and a hint of caramelized bananas. Taste is of roasty chocolate, coffee, vanilla, hard caramel, and bananas with lingering mild hogo. It's one of my favorites and my go-to Jamaican for all purposes. -
Ranger Creek .36 Texas Bourbon
Bourbon — Texas, USA
Reviewed November 16, 2020 (edited November 20, 2020)Nose of toffee, chocolate, and pine nuts with peaches and prunes. Palate is warm, spicy, a bit of rose, and somewhat dry but with leather and persistent burnt sugar notes like a nice aged rum. Finishes like caramel corn. A pretty solid bourbon. -
Nose is of salt spray, driftwood, evergreen trees, and mandarin oranges. Mouthfeel is velvety smooth with predominantly warm flavors of cinnamon and licorice, balanced with pronounced coriander seeds and lightly briny antiseptic. Very good! Tastes like it splits the difference between a traditional London dry and an aquavit.

Tyrconnell 15 Year Madeira Cask Finish
Single Malt — Ireland
Reviewed November 14, 2020 (edited March 26, 2021)Nose is thick, of heavily syruped cherries and pears, as well as buttered pancakes. Palate is peaches, apricots, maple syrup, and shortbread. Finishes with cloves and warm rum raisin flavors. Not as smooth as you would expect a 15 year to be but quite flavorful! -
Clément VSOP Rhum Agricole
Rhum Agricole Vieux — Martinique
Reviewed November 11, 2020 (edited November 4, 2022)Nose: Pineapple, papaya, toasted caramel, a really sweet floral character, and (for lack of a better word) fresh cardboard. Palate: Underripe banana, pressed sugarcane, more of that cardboard, and a fair amount of smoky chilis in dark chocolate. Not as sweet as I expected. Pretty different from the other rums of the world besides rhum barbancourt.
