Balvenie Caribbean Cask 14 Year
Single Malt — Speyside, Scotland
Reviewed November 11, 2019 (edited November 12, 2019)Color is amber. Nose starts with vanilla, wildflower honey, a little malt, and some fruity notes. First sip is subdued sweetness, with notes of fruit and spice at the same time. The spice wraps the fruit is a way that almost makes it feel warm. Mouthfeel is not thin, not oily. With additional sips, the vanilla starts to show, as do some oak notes and an incredibly subtle peat. The spice lingers, leaving a tingle on the tongue alongside the peat for the finish.59.99 USD per Bottle -
Color is a dark copper. Nose has notes of brown sugar, mild funk, and honey. First sip is syrupy in consistency, with rich brown sugar with vanilla and caramel notes as well. Additional sips reveal some rum funk, as well as some complexity I can't identify. Finish lingers with several different variations of spices. This is a rock solid rum, the only downside being the heavy dosing. Solely off flavor, however, this is excellent.

First sip is dark, with lots of baking spices as well a notes of brown sugar. Mouthfeel is not thin, but does have a little drying sensation. Additional sips show notes of toffee and vanilla. Finish is moderate, with more of the baking spices. Overall, a solid if not overly exciting Bourbon. Probably not worth the $50 tag, but no other significant complaints.49.99 USD per Bottle -
Lagavulin Offerman Edition 11 Year
Single Malt — Islay, Scotland
Reviewed October 28, 2019 (edited December 4, 2019)Color is a dark amber. Nose initially consists of leather and peat. Further nosing reveals a distant spiciness. The first sip is earthy, with a light smoky/peaty flavor, with a mild underlying sweetness. Mouthfeel is light, but not in a bad way. Additional sips reveal subtle dried fruit and the distant spice from the nose. Notes of tobacco (cigar smoke?) get revealed later in the glass. The finish is moderate in length, consisting of lingering earthy peat, mild spice, and a mild nuttiness. Not much Scotch experience to compare to, but overall this is excellent.69.0 USD per Bottle -
Maker's Mark Cask Strength
Bourbon — Kentucky, USA
Reviewed October 24, 2019 (edited November 13, 2019)Color is dark Amber, almost bronze. Nose is initially heavy on the ethanol. Given time to rest, the nose reveals fresh cut wheat, honey, oak, and slight hints of citrus. First sip shows some ethanol heat mixed with honey. Mouthfeel is moderate, not thick but definitely not thin. After the initial proof onslaught, notes of honey, vanilla, and wheat show with each sip, while a slight hint of citrus lingers in the background. The finish is a pleasant hint of heat and a mild drying of the tongue. Overall a good amount of flavor and a solid value.45.0 USD per BottleRandall's Wines & Spirits -
Maple syrup on the nose, with the same initial hit on the tongue. Transitions to an oak and leather middle before a spicy finish that lingers. Great on ice. When served with a large whiskey ice cube, the middle opens up to a smoky and sugary middle prior to the oak and spice. Very sippable without losing flavor on the rocks.23.0 USD per BottleSam's Club

Nose is apples and vanilla. First sip is a refreshing apple and honey. Slowly transitions to vanilla and spice. A splash of water mellows out the spice but brings out the vanilla. On ice almost gets sweeter, in a good way; it makes the apple flavor really pop and becomes incredibly sipable. One of the few Whiskies I prefer on ice. Overall, very impressed.

Hochstadter's Slow & Low Rock & Rye (84 Proof)
Rye — (BOTTLED IN) Scobeyville, New Jersey, USA
Reviewed October 21, 2019 (edited November 13, 2020)The nose on this was mighty sweet. You can easily pick out the oranges. First sip is a mix of sweet and subtle spice. A smooth mouthfeel with the sweetness of the rock candy is followed by a transition to the orange. As you swallow, it is chased by the subtle Rye spice. Overall, not quite enough depth of flavor or spice, but definitely not bad. Does make a great introduction for the Whiskey shy/scarred, as the sweetness and lack of punch from the spice aren't as bold as a traditional Rye.27.0 USD per BottleWalmart Supercenter -
Color is a pleasant orange color. Smell is an inviting orange sweetness. First sip is moderately sweet orange, but does not overpower the palate. The sweetness quickly transitions to the signature bitterness. The bitter is definitely present, but it is much more subtle as compared to Campari; it is much easier to palate on its own, but still stands out in a cocktail.20.0 USD per BottleKroger

The artificial color (thankfully not ground bugs anymore...) is an attractive orangey-red that makes for nicely colored drinks. Nose is complex (and for me, indecipherable). Taste is sweet at first, with a complex bitter blast in the middle, before finishing with an orange zest sweetness. Obviously, this is not a liqueur for everyone, but it works well for those who tolerate bitter. I personally would not drink this straight, but I very much enjoy the complex flavors in a Negroni.33.0 USD per BottleBig Red Liquors
