Chivas Regal Strathisla 12 Year Distillery Collection
Single Malt — Speyside, Scotland
Reviewed October 31, 2016 (edited December 1, 2022)Not bad, but I've had better, too sweet, the spice, fruitiness and the mild salt hint don't gel, very oily (which I always like). -
I like peated whisky, I like Irish whiskey... but this is just a bad idea. The whisky first offers beautifully delicate and sweet Irish whiskey flavours, followed by a rather aggressive peat. It's as if someone put two whisk(e)ys together, but they never quite meshed correctly. The same distillery makes Tyrconnell which I think is better than this and I'd recommend Te Bheag and Johnnie Walker Black Label in a similar style. If it's a mix of flamboyant fruit and peat that you want, go for G. Rozelieures Rare.

I can't deny that this whisky is very impressive, with high quality, but I don't like it, I can't tell if it's me or the whisky that's at fault. The whisky is of a bewildering complexity, with delicate Highland flavours, peat, spices, herbs, fruit, honey and with a creamy oily coastal texture. My first impression was that of a cacophony of flavours, a cacophony that some may love to explore again and again, but one that just perplexed.

Bunnahabhain 12 Year
Single Malt — Islay, Scotland
Reviewed October 31, 2016 (edited November 5, 2016)This is yet another whisky that wasn't my style, but I couldn't help but enjoy the impressive style and craftsmanship. It's a softer on peat and rather complex, not fruitier, but more fruit dominated, as per the Northern Islay style, but I am more attached to the Southern Islay style. I would definitely recommend this, worth trying!
