Jura 12 Year
Single Malt — Islands, Scotland
Reviewed September 17, 2023 (edited September 19, 2023)Caramel and light peat nose. Very sweet off the hop, caramel, honey, raisins and the slightest hint of peat. Slight burn. Medium finish with more sweetness and a little smokiness. What can I say, a solid dram for the price. Probably the lightest peat I've tasted and would make a great starter for those dabbling in the peated world. Nothing special, but a small step above the average everyday malts. -
Vanilla, coffee and orange peel jump at you as you take in the nose. Like a fine French latte. The first sip is an explosion of flavors without even a hint of harshness. At this point it moves from a French Latte to a Cuban coffee, with strong brown sugar and cinnamon notes. As you continue, chocolate and citrus come out to play as well. The finish is long and satisfying with a little more coffee and cinnamon. I'm still fairly new to rum in general, but this to me is the Cognac of aged rums. One of the top spirits I've tasted on this tasting journey thus far. I'm probably going to now visit Guyana at some point just to go to the El Dorado distillery. This is world class in a glass.

Vanilla, caramel and rye spice nose. The rum influence is right there from the get go. A little watery on the palate, but very little burn. Not as sweet as you might expect based on the aroma. The rye and cereal really come through here, with subtle vanilla and tropical fruit. Finish is medium/short but the rum notes really come through again here. All in all a very solid and unique offering from my home province here in Canada. This would be a great dram to throw in to a blind tasting. It's aged rum!...no wait it's rye!....well actually maybe rum! Actually what the hell is this other than tasty??40.0 CAD per Bottle

Fruity nose, fresh grapes, apples and berries. Incredibly smooth palate; one of the easiest drinking spirits I've ever encountered. Black cherry and honey dominate the flavour profile. Starts dry but gets sweeter. Finish is surprisingly lengthy but there isn't an overwhelming flavour other than general fruitiness. I was a little worries buying this because of the mediocre reviews, but I really like it. Yes not terribly complex but it's damn delicious and tastes like something you'd drink after vanquishing someone in a dual with French rapiers.

Blanton's Original Single Barrel
Bourbon — Kentucky, USA
Reviewed September 12, 2023 (edited September 13, 2023)Strong vanilla and toffee on the nose with a hint of maple and pipe tobacco. Sweet and a little oily on the palate. Maple forward with hints of chocolate, citrus and leather. A little hot and spicy as well. Finish is long with lots of warm baking spices. I'd been saving this bottle for a special occasion and brought it out for my good friend's bachelor party. All 6 of us loved it and needless to say it didn't last long. Hope I can find another one again soon. -
Pierre Ferrand Dry Curaçao
Triple Sec/Curaçao — Cognac, France
Reviewed September 7, 2023 (edited September 8, 2023)Citrus bomb on the nose. You're walking through an orange grove. Also a little bit of fruity grape notes. Sweet and buttery on the palate but by no means cloying like drinking Cointreau neat. Naval orange, mandarin and grapefruit. Goes down like candy. The finish is medium length with more citrusy goodness and a hint if cinnamon. It almost feels like a waste using this in a cocktail because it's so damned delicious neat. I'd be inclined to at most just add some soda water and a lemon/lime wedge. -
Beautiful bottle with the red wax seal, but the cork was already disintegrating a little when I cracked it open. It was on clearance at the LCBO here in Ontario so maybe this bottle has been sitting around for a while. No worries though, it made me feel like Blackbeard dusting off an old bottle of grog found on a merchant ship he'd just slaughtered the crew of. Tropical fruits, burnt sugar and cinnamon on the nose in addition to some ethanol. Sweet, smooth but a little watery on the palate. Molasses, vanilla, banana and cinnamon. Fruity finish where the oak also comes through, medium length. Interestingly, there's no heat on the palate but all on the finish. Glad I tried it and would order it again but maybe not buy a whole bottle. A solid sipper for a skipper.

Nose really draws you in with strong vanilla and cereal. Smells like a perfect marriage of rye and bourbon. The flavours explode onto the palate with a spicy sweetness. It reminds me of a fruit salad where there are a bunch of different notes blended into something new. Vanilla, caramel, corn flakes, fresh baked bread and warm spices. The finish is hot and the sweet cereal notes linger. This is already quite good but does taste quite young. A little rough around the edges. With some further aging this has the potential to be a world class whisky.

My 69th review. Nice. Customary Bowmore peat comes first on the nose, followed by dark fruits, prunes and raisins. You definitely smell the sherry influences. Starts sweet with a slightly oily mouthfeel, but gets dryer as you go. The peat is fairly muted and is balanced with other flavours. Dark honey, red wine, black pepper. There's a lot going on here but it works. The finish is lengthy and slightly hot. Quite dry and spicy. Definitely more complex than the 12 year, but takes a little getting used to. It's dark and mysterious like the Count of Monte Cristo. Which makes me think it would probably be a perfect accompaniment for a Montecristo cigar.110.0 CAD per Bottle

Gibson's Finest Bold 8 Year
Canadian — Ontario, Canada
Reviewed August 31, 2023 (edited September 1, 2023)Strong ethanol hit on the nose, followed by rye spice, dill and caraway. Not exactly drawing me in. The palate is a bit confused as well. Not particularly pleasant off the get go, a little bit sour and bitter. As you start to taste the spices it improves a bit. Strong wood tannins, tastes added and not naturally occuring. The finish is fine but fairly short. It at least mellows out the tannic bitterness. Water brings out the sweetness a little bit more but I probably will only be drinking this again in cocktails. Wouldn't buy again. Stick with Wiser's 10 year at this price point. Shot to the heart, and Gibson's is to blame. You give Canadian Whisky a bad name.32.0 CAD per Bottle
