The nose is more reminiscent of a bourbon than of a rye in that the sugars are upfront and forward well in advance of the rye spices. Vanilla, caramel, brown sugar with apples and black pepper are the dominant notes. The sugars coat the roof of the mouth when sipped with very little burn to the throat. The low proof point of 80 prevents this whiskey from having much of a finish with the flavors all dissipating rapidly. On the nose, the aromas that immediately come forward are rye spice, vanilla, and smoke. Mint, and tart green apple are also noticeable. The tasting notes that are immediately present are the spices which hit the throat and sit there gently, followed by vanilla and brown sugar that coat the roof of the mouth. A gentle cherry note or perhaps a white grapefruit note is also noticeable. The smoke obtained on the nosing does not come across upon tasting. Further sips bring out a briny salt water note that is stunning. A good rye but pricey in my area and allocated. There are better Canadian ryes out there including anything from Lot 40 for far less money. Nose: 3.5/5 Taste: 4.25/5 Overall 4/5 Repurchase: No Type: Friday Night Pour54.99 CAD per Bottle

The nose is what a rye whiskey is intended to be. Rye spice and mint come across immediately followed by bittersweet chocolate and a light German pumpernickel. Not much sweetness on the nose, just pure rye. Upon tasting, black pepper and rye spice hit the back of the throat with brown sugar and vanilla notes coating the roof of the mouth creating a salivation and the want for the next sip. Dark semi sweet chocolate is also apparent. This is a wonderful rye from Lot 40. Superb. Nose: 4/5 Taste: 4.5/5 Overall 4.25/5 Repurchase: Yes Type: Friday Night Pour64.99 CAD per Bottle

The nose is a fine example of what a rye should smell like. Peppery, with a smidge of mint and sweet brown sugar intertwined with vanilla. The taste offers no surprises following the notes obtained on the nose. Black pepper hits the back of the throat and lingers there for a long while. The vanilla and brown sugar coat the roof of the mouth, triggering a salivating effect that creates the want for the next sip. Outstanding rye!!! Great neat, and exceptional in an Old Fashioned. One of my favorite ryes. In a blind with far more expensive ryes this holds its own and often finishes tops. First notes on the nose are brown sugar, vanilla, and oak spice. Subtle hints of green apple and black pepper are also apparent. First tasting brought out a lot of the sweet notes with the brown sugar and vanilla taking center stage on the roof of the mouth and the oak and pepper hitting the throat very mildly. The flavors do not linger very long unfortunately, but are very pleasant nonetheless. The second sip was a blast of vanilla that lingered much longer with the brown sugar also appearing. At a higher proof this pour may be worthy of the hefty price, but for what it is, there are far better bourbons for less cost, but this is still a good pour. Old Forester Single Barrel Bourbon Barrel Strength
Bourbon — Kentucky, USA
Reviewed January 19, 2024 (edited February 29, 2024)She is a hot one!! The nose has immensely intense aromas of caramel, vanilla, brown sugar, sweet corn, and new leather. It also has an incredibly intense amount of peppery notes and rye spice. Further wafts bring out that oh so familiar masticated banana note as well as apricot. Very complex and oh so inviting. The palate is warm as this is a proofy pour, but the amount of flavor is immense. Black pepper, black tea, and leather mix with the caramel, vanilla, and brown sugar coating the mouth from the teeth to the throat. The finish is incredibly long and a salivation of the mouth occurs awaiting the next sip. This is very rare in my area appearing once every 3 or 4 years and always worth purchasing. For a product that is triple oaked, the aromas on the nosing come through very muted. Caramel, and artificial vanilla are the dominant notes but oak is present in the background. A wine note is also present reminiscent of that found perhaps in Angel's Envy bourbon. On the palate the caramel makes itself very known with the spices gently warming the throat. Brown sugar, vanilla, and toffee are also present. The finish is medium to long which was unexpected as the offering is only 85% APV. Very pleasant and too be honest better than I expected from the reviews I read. Overall rating: Nose: 3.5/5 Taste: 4/5 Overall: 3.75/5 Repurchase: Yes Type: Daily Drinker39.99 CAD per Bottle

Complex nose consisting of vanilla, green apple, honey, grapefruit zest, and seawater spray. Letting it sit a while brings out apricot, melon and unripened pear. The palate consists of vanilla, honey, salt water brine, and green apple. I find this to become better and better the more it is allowed to sit and breathe. I did not add any water to this or expose it to cold air or ice but I suspect that the profile would almost completely change. Nose: 4/5 Taste: 3.75/5 Overall 3.75/5 Repurchase: NO (Allocated bottle in my region and I don't feel it is worthy of the asking price). Type: Special Occasion133.99 CAD per Bottle

On the nose a huge amount of vanilla and rye spice hit first mellowing into notes of cherry, caramel, and brown sugar. The spices continue to infiltrate the nasal passage causing you to think that the proof is much higher than the 107. The spiciness is very apparent on the palate and immediately attacks the throat with warmth. The teeth and roof of the mouth are completely coated with caramel, vanilla, brown sugar, and notes of white grapefruit and apricot. The finish is long lasting and continues to deliver flavors. Further sips replenish the mouth with the full flavors this bourbon has to offer. This is a very complex and gorgeous offering. Jim Beam has done well here. Nose is caramel, vanilla, banana, and semi sweet dark chocolate with a tinge of orange peel and a wee bit of clove. On the palate the vanilla and caramel come on strong coating the tongue and back of the throat. There is the slightest amount of spice but it is very mild and almost indiscernible with the amount of sweetness this rum puts out. The finish is fairly long and quite welcoming. a very enjoyable pour. Nose: 3.75/5 Taste: 4.25/5 Overall: 4/5 Repurchase: Yes Type: Friday Night Pour48.99 CAD per Bottle
