Macallan 12 Year Sherry Oak Cask
Single Malt — Highlands, Scotland
Reviewed December 29, 2019 (edited December 19, 2021)Fruity, caramel on the nose. Palate follows nose and is boring with a bitter aftertaste. I really don’t get why people like this. For the same price you can get Quinta Ruban which has so much more to offer. -
Laphroaig Triple Wood
Single Malt — Islay, Scotland
Reviewed December 19, 2019 (edited May 17, 2020)Served neat in a glencairn after ten minutes rest. This review is a collage of many glasses all served neat and rested ten minutes. It often takes me more than one dram to collect all the tasting notes. Smoked bacon nose, very woody with a touch of sea air. Palate of meaty burnt wood. Big full mouthfeel. I haven’t tried adding any water to this but I can’t imagine it needing it. The flavor to me is incredible. Love the barrel and peat notes. Very savory whisky. Has a slight malty sweetness, while being savory. The finish brings a welcome slight bitterness that wonderfully cuts through the sweet, savory, smoky palate. Not as complex as some but the flavors here are just fucking delicious! -
Smells like smoked dark fruits, maybe burnt raisins, bit of bacon, bandaids, and sea air. Dark fruit and white pepper on the palate, a hint of blackberry comes later. Water brings out citrus note on nose. Peat gets a little medicinal on the finish. But it all works so well together. Not a casual sipper; complex and thought provoking. To date this is the most complex scotch whisky I’ve had and probably my favorite.

Had a bar pour in a served neat in a small rocks glass. Hints of fruit are on the nose with wafts of campfire smoke. Palate is super dry with a smoldering taste along with leather and tobacco. The finish is the highlight with smoldering notes that never seem to stop. I really really enjoy this.15.0 USD per Pour

Loads of caramel, vanilla, and oak. This is a definite oak bomb. Thick heavy mouthfeel. A bit bitter on the finish because of this, but also has some nougat. Tastes kinda like licking the inside of a barrel. I like it but not in love. It’s complex just maybe not my flavor, at least not for the standard bottle price. Edit: with a touch of water more complex cherry and dusty notes come out. With more water this is becoming more my speed. Complex notes that I can’t even pick out are emerging. Lots of heat on the nose like red hots. A little water tames the heat. Dusty up front followed by brown sugar, minimal fruit. A little orange citrus. Hard to explain but I like it. Lingering brown sugar, cinnamon, touch of orange. The brown sugar sweetness lingers with a long finish and slight oaky bitterness. Unique. Great round mouthfeel. The oaky bitterness for me is keeping it from a higher score. Still highly recommend, especially when on sale40.0 USD per Bottle

Purchased this for a batched strained watermelon cocktail with fresh mint. Don’t know much about vodka but recall liking this one years ago. Tasting it neat it’s clean up front with almost no burn. The slight oak aging gives it a nice finish and slightly full body as compared to other vodkas I’ve tried.20.0 USD per Bottle
