New Riff 8 Year Kentucky Straight Bourbon
Bourbon — Kentucky, USA
Reviewed September 22, 2024 (edited September 25, 2024)Nose is not complex, but pleasant, straight up peanuts and chocolate, maybe a touch of oak and leather. Palate brings more, sweet chocolate, cinnamon, fall spices, and black pepper. I lose the nuttiness from the nose. Finish lingers nicely with the chocolate and the pepper. Ice mellows the pepper, good either way. Solid, good proof point (100), amd decent price ($70).70.0 USD per Bottle -
Post MGP bottle (2024) but it still states distilled in KY, so assume they are finishing out the contract with Heaven Hill. I only paid $40 for this so before reading the label, I assumed this was MGP Indiana whiskey. If I tried this in a blind, I might have guessed it was Beam. The nose has some sweet butterscotch, but I definitely get peanut. Palate adds hay, and the heat is black pepper. ice mellows the pepper immediately and the hay is more prominent. I prefer it straight. Wish I'd boufht a second bottle at that price. No change in previous rating. This is a 4.0-4.25 whiskey consistently. Anxious to try one it switches to MGP.40.0 USD per Bottle

Heaven Hill Grain to Glass Bourbon (2024 Release)
Bourbon — Kentucky, USA
Reviewed August 9, 2024 (edited October 2, 2024)I didnt expect this to taste like anything else from Heaven Hill, and I was right. Thr nosedoes bring some sweet caramel, but largely brings rye spice notes, cardamom, clove, nutmeg and mint. Overall, very mild. Palate starts with new oak, spices following. A lot of pepper. Finish is mixed. Reads youbger than i thought it would. I wobder if another few years in the barrel would ease the tannins and bring more flavor depth. Over all, a good concept, abd interesting bottle, but i feel no urge to buy another. -
Four Roses Private Selection Single Barrel Barrel Strength Bourbon (OBSO)
Bourbon — Kentucky, USA
Reviewed July 21, 2024 (edited July 22, 2024)This is a Lees Summit Missouri HyVee pick. A whopping 124.6 proof, very dark coloring. Nose overwhelms my nostrils. Taking it in lightly, I'm getting burnt sugar and cocoa, and a light floral note, but I don't pick up any fruitiness. Alcohol definitely makes its presence known. Palate is strong, less sweet than expected, but definitely chocolatey, and strong cherry. The heat of the proof reads peppery. The cocoa lingers and turns a little bitter at the end. Overall, very good. I tried it with a single small ice cube; the chocolate took over and it became a little one note. Better straight.95.0 USD per Bottle -
James E. Pepper Decanter Barrel Proof Straight Bourbon Whiskey
Bourbon — Kentucky, USA
Reviewed July 21, 2024 (edited September 8, 2024)Very oily long legs. Nose is cake icing, oaky, and floral, maybe a tinge young. Palate is very nice, sweet caramel, cherry syrup, a hint of almond, finishing with black pepper which turns slightly astringent. Ice mellowed the finish, but also diminished the whiskey overall.61.0 USD per Bottle -
Nice nose. Typical MM notes. Light apple, sweet caramel and spice, with the added bonus of hay and leather. Palate brings strong caramel, apples, vanilla, spice and black pepper. A hint of chlorine which I get from MM often. Finish is a bit cut off and unimpressive. The limited releases are real hit and miss with me. This is more miss than hit. Pleasant, but nothing memorable. Standard BP options and most of the private selections are better.

NULU Toasted Single Barrel Bourbon
Bourbon — (bottled in) Kentucky, USA
Reviewed June 11, 2024 (edited June 12, 2024)Barrel# B254T, 110.4pr. Nose is sweet caramels with a hint of fruit, leather, and straw. Palate is very sweet, carameled apples. Not reading much spice profile. I hate the phrase, but this is very smooth at 110 proof. Finish is mild, sweet straw, but does have a nice pepper in it. Very nice, a good intro to higher proof whiskey. Not particularly complex. -
Larceny Barrel Proof Bourbon Batch A124
Bourbon — Kentucky, USA
Reviewed March 25, 2024 (edited June 10, 2024)Nose is apple butter up front but also brings orange citrus and cloves tempered with a good amount of cream of tartar. The palate feels thick, reading that same spice with cinnamon added. I'm not gettong a lot of fruit which I usually get with wheated whiskies (including Larceny). Finishes chocolatey. This is very clean for a barrel proof whiskey, not very hot. Finish does end a little chemically, though. A swirl of ice did not seem to bring the fruit forward but did accentuate the chocolate on the finish and negate the chemical taste, brought a woodiness to it as well. It seems like HH has been honing in on the Larceny BP's since they introduced it a few yeara ago. It's been getting better every year. I like this rendition.65.0 USD per Bottle -
Elijah Craig Barrel Proof Bourbon Batch A124
Bourbon — Kentucky, USA
Reviewed March 25, 2024 (edited March 26, 2024)Nose is pleasant, but a bit weak for this whiskey. I get caramel and leather, a touch of cinnamon apples and barn hay with just a hint of chlorine. Palate brings the same with spicy black pepper. Finish lingers but is bitter, maybe bittersweet chocolate. This doesnt bring a lot of depth to me. I added ice, swirled and immediately re-tasted. It did cut the bitterness, but did the same to the good flavors. This may be me being over critical after a superb 2023, but this is probably my least favorite ECBP in the 12+/- years I've been drinking it. I really hope this is an anomoly and not the start of a trend. I've seen too many whiskies drop off with the rise in popularity. I see this is the youngest I can remember and maybe the lowest proof too? I hope ot os not a sign of things to come . First regular EC dropped the 12 year label, and not ECBP isn't even close. Fingers crossed, HH knows this is a bug let down and corrects course. Don't be the next Bookers!80.0 USD per Bottle -

Rye — Kentucky, USA
Reviewed March 17, 2024 (edited March 18, 2024)Nose is very herbal and sweet bbq sauce. Palate screams rye. I get toasted rye bread andanise, but sweet as well. I also get Mexican chocolate. Herbiness is present as well. Finishes with the peppery chocolate, nice but a bit short. Overall, this us a very nice rye.
