Frey Ranch 100% Malted Corn Bourbon
Bourbon — Nevada, USA
Reviewed May 7, 2023 (edited November 3, 2023)NOSE Oak, leather, dried dark fruit, caramel, baking spice, citrus peels, touch cocoa. A very classic bourbon aroma. Nothing in this gives away that it comes from malted or 100% corn. PALATE Oak, leather, baking spice, grassy fresh corn, clove, cocoa and a touch of dried apples. The amount of spice in this is amazing and brings this sweet and earthy duality to it. FINISH Medium -> Sweet, spicy and grassy with a bit of oak and leather. -
Frey Ranch Single Barrel Straight Rye, Barrel Strength
Rye — Fallon, Nevada, USA
Reviewed May 5, 2023 (edited December 26, 2023)NOSE Oaky, dried dark fruit, cinnamon, cocoa, vanilla, leather and a touch of char. Heavy and brooding, the aroma has a heaft to it. PALATE Oak, rye spice, dill, bready, grassy, complex baking spice, pepper and leather with a touch of brown sugar and dried dark fruit and vanilla. Complex and heavy, it takes a bit to fully unfold and go through the layers. FINISH Long -> Oak, complex spice fades to a dark sweetness and grassy grain and clove. -
NOSE Rye spice, dried fruit, oak, Necco Wafers, vanilla taffy, some spice and copper. Light and airy, but distinctly a rye with that punchy rye note coming right through. PALATE Rye spice, woody oak, dried fruit, vanilla taffy, caramel syrup, some spice and copper. This sits right between woody and oaky, like it needs more time to finish the transformation. FINISH Medium -> Rye spice, copper, orange candy, spice.

NOSE Oak, toasted corn, yeasty, biscuity, minerality and some candy sweetness. It smells like a bakery, like fresh bread dough. Odd. PALATE Woody, orange candy, toasted grain, raw bread dough, caramel syrup, baking spice and a slight grassy note. Odd… so odd. That doughiness comes through here as well and I feel like a kid making bread with my parents again. FINISH Medium-short -> Bread dough, woodiness, cough medicine and grassy grain.

Blackened X Wes Henderson (Master of Whiskey Series)
Bourbon — Kentucky, USA
Reviewed May 3, 2023 (edited May 15, 2023)NOSE Jammy/fruity, oak, cinnamon, caramel, touch metallic with an alcohol pop. Not a ton going on with the aroma, hard to get much out of it except the alcohol that keeps popping up over and over. PALATE Jammy/fruity, oaky, cinnamon, caramel, vanilla, roasted citrus, bits of cocoa, leather and marshmallow. There’s a roasty, almost ashy, quality to it that sits under a large dollop of jammy sweetness. FINISH Med-long -> Ashy oak, nuts, cinnamon and heavy fruity sweetness. -
Jefferson's Ocean Aged at Sea New York Edition
Bourbon — USA
Reviewed May 2, 2023 (edited May 3, 2023)NOSE Banana’s Foster, nuts, oak, vanilla and some light spice. Weirdly light, I’m struggling to get much out of the aroma. PALATE Caramel, oak, peanuts, malted cocoa, caramelized banana, baking spice, dried fruit and some vanilla candy. More complex on the palate and a tad unusual for a Jefferson’s Ocean release FINISH Medium -> Spice, banana pudding, caramel and oak. -
Rabbit Hole Founder's Collection Raceking Double Chocolate Malt Bourbon (2022 Release)
Bourbon — Kentucky, USA
Reviewed May 2, 2023 (edited June 20, 2023)NOSE Oak, caramel, leather, spice, citrus peel, touch char. Not a very expressive aroma, but rather muted and light. PALATE Oak, herbal notes, caramel, coffee, roasted nuts, char, cocoa, baking spice. Much more expressive than the aroma with an “edible espresso beans” quality. FINISH Med-long -> Espresso beans, herbal, cocoa and vanilla. -
Woodford Reserve Distillery Series Toasted Oak Oat Grain (2022)
Bourbon — Kentucky, USA
Reviewed May 1, 2023NOSE Oak, char, cocoa, nutmeg, dark fruit, cinnamon, vanilla taffy, and a touch anise. Wow, quite nice PALATE Tannic oak, char, dry cocoa, dark fruit, cinnamon, vanilla cherry coke, oat. Dry, harsh, touch metallic, FINISH Medium -> Oak, char, cocoa and fruit. -
NOSE Fresh pastries, candied fruit, toasted grains, nuts, vanilla, dried fruit, buttery oak, hint of spice. Wasn’t expecting this aroma, it’s completely a-typical to bourbon, and not in a bad way. PALATE Fresh pastries, dried fruit, baking spice, buttered popcorn jelly beans, and a bit of crafty wood. Very similar to the aroma but more buttery and instead of oak that crafty, dry, wood note creeps in. FINISH Medium -> Buttered popcorn jelly beans, spice, wood.

HIRSCH The Cask Strength Finished in Cognac Casks
Bourbon — Kentucky, USA
Reviewed April 30, 2023 (edited August 16, 2023)NOSE Oak, grapey cognac, baking spice, copper, toasted bread, leather, cocoa, and vanilla. A nice duality between the cognac and the bourbon here, a very pleasant sniffer. PALATE Dried dark fruit, oak, complex baking spice, cocoa, grapey sweetness, copper, vanilla taffy, and some cocoa. Like the aroma, the palate is heavy and carries a balance of cognac and bourbon. FINISH Long -> Baking spice, oak, leather, and cognac sweetness.
