The Prideful Goat 6 Year Cask Strength Rye
Rye — Indiana , USA
Reviewed August 24, 2023 (edited August 28, 2024)Prideful Goat Single Barrel Selected for Bourbon Real Talk Plus 114.2 Proof 57.1% ABV Bottle 186 Purchased from Seelbachs Aroma- honey teddy bear graham crackers, toffee and apple pie, toasted marshmallow, fresh cracked black pepper,As it opens, I’m getting a bit more cinnamon and baking rye spices. Outstanding nose. Taste - Getting lots of toffee and fall apple cider donut notes. Slight note of bitter dark chocolate. Nice vanilla finish with a rye profile Overall - The nose is better than the palate. Viscosity is medium, finish is really nice. The palate is not complex, but not as spicy as most 95/5 ryes. In fact I would have never had guessed this was a 95/5 rye. This is definitely on the sweeter side. Definitely worth the purchase. This seems like a bourbon lovers rye to be honest (lots more dark tones than rye notes) 4.3 -
Aroma- Great balance of light and dark tones here. Birthday cake/cupcake batter mixed with dark berries. Lot of dessert like notes. As it opens, I keep getting honey graham cracker teddy bears. Very little rye profile here.. it’s farther away from the glass. The alcohol presence is quite evident and kind of dominates the nose. Taste - Brown sugar, caramel and tons of alcohol soaked dark fruits. Rye hides very well until much later in the finish where it randomly pops alongside a drying oaky note. Rye comes quite earthy and spicy. I get a slight hint of a barnyard hay note (similar to what I find in Willet 4yr which is one of my personal favorites). Overall - Very very proofy… The front and mid palate is solid. Viscosity and mouthfeel is above average as well. But the finish lacks depth and is all alcohol. For a Single Barrel, Barrel Proof offering… give me JDSBBP 10/10 times. This is good, but it’s not great and for the price point it’s just okay. Never thought I would say this but I think the 96 proof Bardstown is far better.

John J Bowman Single Barrel Bourbon
Bourbon — Virginia, USA
Reviewed August 24, 2023 (edited September 24, 2023)Aroma - from the depths of an abyss… this thing is dark! Leather, deep oak, dark fruits of plums and black berry jam. Really liking these dark tones that are bold and in your face. The alcohol presence is undetectable. There is a slight “funk” to it as it opens up but I cannot pin point what profile that is. Taste - wow that wasn’t what I was expecting coming off the nose… a dump truck of vanilla mixed with berries. Some major nostalgia coming through here… my grandma used to always buy a particular brand of Christmas cookies for us when we were growing up … and for the fist time in 15-20 years I’m experiencing that flavor profile again. Overall - this offering is very good. I view the plate experience as a “U” the from the of the palate starts off strong, mid palate is soft, then the back of the palate and through the finish is great. Medium- Long finish. 4.35 -
Jack Daniel's Single Barrel Barrel Proof Rye (2023 Release)
Rye — Tennessee, USA
Reviewed August 17, 2023 (edited September 24, 2023)127.4 Proof Bottled 6.14.23 Barrel House 2-18 Barrel # 23-05483 Aroma - brown sugar, plums, raisins, baking spices and slightly burnt marshmallow..: this is really weird nose for a JD product…I’m having doubts Taste - brown sugar, caramel, cinnamon red hots and baking spices up front. Absolutely a metric ton of herbal spices on the backend and through the finish. Overall - this barrel falls incredibly short of my expectations for a JDSBBP. This is one of the weakest proof JDSBBP offerings I’ve had and it’s by far the most underwhelming I’ve had. There simply is no depth or complexity. It’s viscous but the finish is medium at best and just an ethanol burn that continues. Very disappointing bottle. My first bottle/review was absolutely fantastic and the proof was >130 proof WT Rare Breed Rye and Stellum Rye, crushes this bottle and you save $20-40 (I would also recommend Bardstown Origins Rye, Prideful Goat 6 Yr, Willett 4 yr and many others over this) -
7 year Age Statement Aroma - wow, thats nice… sweet toffee and bubblegum rye notes. Slight notes of strawberries and even citrusy lemon note. Some cotton candy notes as well. Man for a 7 year rye at sub $40.. this has a really good nose. I hope everything transfers to the palate. Taste - Everything from the nose transfers to the palate with the pleasant addition of a very light oak profile on the finish. Still get that bubblegum rye notes (no spicy rye notes), still very sweet and bright fruits with a touch of citrus with a nice toffee backbone. Bourbon drinkers rye without a doubt. Overall - It’s really good for the $40 price tag. Everything about it is above my expectations as far as the palate goes. It has great balance and really nice flavor profile at this price point. And the finish is quite nice as well for the proof. This is an absolute must have on hand and a great offering for someone who wants to try out a rye. And the new age statement makes for a great value

Ben Holladay 6 Year Bottled in Bond Bourbon
Bourbon — Missouri, USA
Reviewed August 7, 2023 (edited August 9, 2023)Aroma - caramel, red apples, sugar candy notes, blue raspberry cotton candy. Slight hint of baking spices in the back. This is bright with nice dark undertones. Taste - caramel popcorn, then the usual suspects of vanilla and slight oak. There is a slight drying oak presence on the finish, and picking up a slight tannic profile as well. But to be honest, this is very good. Overall - This is insanely gentle on the palate and the balance on this is exceptional. Not sure what the mash bill on this is, but I would think it is predominately 75-80% corn. It is very sweet and I do pick up nice rye undertone that elevates the experience. This is a great BiB offering… I would like to blind this against EHT and Bardstown Origins BiB. Extremely Crushable 4.35 -
Basil Hayden Dark Rye
Other Whiskey — Multiple Countries
Reviewed July 26, 2023 (edited July 27, 2023)Aroma - bright red fruits (strawberries, and apples), honey crackers, pie baking spices, brown sugar and caramel. Balance is decent. Smells like a good fall / dessert-like whiskey. Taste - Wow was that dreadful first sip. Second sip… not much better. This is like drinking a puree of prune juice and mint toothpaste. The port and the rye clash and the port simply body slams the rye notes. Maybe this might be good with some orange bitters and ice? Make it like an old-fashioned without the cherry and sugar… chug it… then do yourself a favor and never look at this bottle again. Place it out on the counter for birthday events and hope and pray that some poor soul decides to try this one out…. Then watch them from afar and video their reaction while they sip this dreadful beverage. Save your money.
