The nose comes across as hot at first, but once you get past that I get sweet and fruity notes followed by some light wood. The sweetness, fruit, and light wood carries over to the palate with a little earthiness. The heat from the nose is non-existent on the palate, this drinks smooth. The sweet fruit remains after the sip is gone. It's a pleasant rye, low on the spice notes but certainly a good deal for the price.37.0 USD per Bottle

Still Austin The Musician Cask Strength
Bourbon — Texas, USA
Reviewed April 2, 2024 (edited April 4, 2024)While it's a young bourbon (minimum of 2 years in the hot Texas summers), it is not lacking in rich flavors. The nose has mix of young green wood and musky old oak. Together they mix with sweet candy, vanilla, and caramel notes and a hint of potpourri. When combined, it reminds me of an indoor area of a local plant nursery from my childhood. On the palate, the young wood is there but not overbearing, some alcohol heat (again from the youth) is present, followed by that same candy sweetness from the nose. The light notes linger a good bit after the sip. Given how young this is, it's a really goos bourbon.50.0 USD per Bottle -
Virginia Distillery co. VHW Port Cask Finished whisky
Blended Malt — USA
Reviewed March 24, 2024 (edited April 8, 2024)This is going to come across as a brief review, since I'm having trouble pulling out distinct notes. But the nose and front palate have light yet distinct fruit notes typical of brandy/cognac I've briefly had. The back end of the palate has the roasty grainy malted barley note I've picked up on in the few American single malts I've had. Not my typical cup of tea, yet a very pleasant and inoffensive pour.5.0 USD per Pour -
Nose is light and sweet with surprisingly no ethanol burn despite the proof. Palate is thin with sweet notes mixed with light wood finishing with a bit of caramel. Not a bad pour, but disappointing given that I expected more from it. Blind I would score it slightly higher, but it's dragged down due to price leading to higher expectations. I've seen some reviews absolutely killing this bottle. While I don't think it's anywhere near worth the cost, it's not a terrible pour. For the price I'd expect something more complex. But it is what it is. Of the lineup my preference was premium >> reserve >> signature. Strange how the "entry level" offering was the best and most complex of the lot.

Whistlepig 10 Year Small Batch Rye
Rye — (bottled in) Vermont, Canada
Reviewed March 11, 2024 (edited March 26, 2024)When tasting this all I keep thinking of is how it reminds me of a woody hefeweizen. The notes in the whiskey are a mix of hefeweizen-like notes combined with oak and musty old basement wood. While my preference is for spicy ryes this is certainly an interesting pour. -
Part of a whiskey row sampler pack, the nose starts out as a rich bouquet of sweet fruits, this transitions to a familiar Brown-Foreman smell, before fading the a little bit of ethanol heat. The fruit notes continue straight into the palate, just a hint of spice and oak, and a slight medicinal note. Through and through the fruit contiues long after a sip. While this isn't my favorite Old Forester offering, this is by no means a slight on the product. It's a very good fruit-foreward bourbon that I'm certainly happy to drink.50.0 USD per Bottle

On closeout for a steal of a price. Enjoyed the single barrel expression I was previously given, so I had to buy it. For a whiskey that's only 2 years old, the Texas heat does wonders for it. The nose is a bit hot, but has layers of burnt caramel and dried fruits. The rich fruits carry over to the palate. This combines with a bit of heat and spice before rich molasses and a hint of oak comes through. The molasses remains long into the finish mixing with a little oak. Out of the small group of American single malt whiskey I've sampled, this remains my favorite.31.0 USD per Bottle
