Wow I’m glad I didn’t fall for this one boys- I should have known; no age statement, fancy pants packaging, priced just high enough to compete with JW Blue... this whiskey was nothing special; it was run of the mill $50 dollar a bottle brown water dressed up like $300... it reminds me of one of those Replica Kit Bondo Ferrari’s sitting on a Pontiac frame.... not great. I ordered a glass of macallan rare cask next to a bunnahabhain 12yr —- the bunna blew it away in every aspect; from the nose, palate, mouthfeel, to the finish- .... and worst of all the macallan didn’t even have that round mouth feel that I’m used to. I’m not going to get into the specifics of flavor elements - however I’ll just say it was totally undecipherable and unimpressive all along the way. .. watch out for expensive NAS whiskey people- no matter how they try to sell it- it’s drug dealer mentality at the corporate level plaguing our shelves more and more .🤮

Caol Ila 18 Year (2017 Special Release)
Single Malt — Islay, Scotland
Reviewed November 6, 2018 (edited June 23, 2019)I totally recommend buying this bottle. It’s one of the most complex and exhilarating whiskeys I’v tasted to date m - it’s lightly Smokey but the smoke is unlike ardbeg, talisker, or laphroaig- it’s subtle and distant. The excitement comes with the white peppery spice and fruitiness on the back end - it ramps up like no other. After sipping caol ila you realize that it’s the exciting malt added into Johnny Walker. Cheers! -
Glengoyne 21 Year
Single Malt — Highlands, Scotland
Reviewed November 3, 2018 (edited April 2, 2022)Bought a bottle of this - ... so let me start by saying it has a wonderful nose for scotch - right off the bat it has an extensive array of aromas floating out of the glass, very pleasant and unexpected. ... the palate has citrus, light sweetness, and green apple notes. However, for “21 years”, ...idk - it has a hell of a bite, very spicy and lacks smoothness - if anything; where I know smoothness to be at this age - I found it to be watery and light - even after a mean onset of spice; it fades quickly into watery instead of oily. This scotch reminds me of what might be a center cut version of King Robert - and IMO it feels more like a watered down 14 year scotch than a 21. I’m not disappointed, I’m just now wowed. I heard this was comparable to a macallan 18-... not. even. close. BUD.; the Mac is many time smoother, balanced, and has an amazing mouth feel- unlike this. I don’t want you think this is a bottle kill review - but I have my doubts about the authenticity of the age statement on the liquid itself - and it’s definitely not for the macallan lovers- it’s more for fans of glenmorangie 18 or Glenfiddich 12. -
Friday, after a long week- saw this bad boy on the shelf and i I figured what the heck- Boom! Signature BT nose - reminiscent of a pappy 10 with a little more citrus. Palate: hot! The oak sets in after a few seconds along with a light sweetness- orange peel comes to mind. The finish is dry and short. I’d have to put this one side by side with other Weller to decipher the difference - but if you can find this bottle at retail- I think it’s a great collector bourbon.

Scapa 2005 12 Year Distillery Labels (Gordon & MacPhail)
Single Malt — Islands, Scotland
Reviewed October 30, 2018This whiskey has a super unique profile, it’s unlike most scotches- zero sulphur on the nose, smooth mouth entry, tasty Sauvignon blanc elements on the palat, quick finish . it’s a perfect scotch bourbon marriage because they both cancel out each other’s weaknesses- making this a smooth light buttery sipper. My only gripe is it’s viscosity - it’s very thin and watery; but somehow all of it it works quite well. -
Kavalan Solist Ex-Bourbon Single Cask Strength
Single Malt — Taiwan
Reviewed October 30, 2018 (edited August 20, 2019)Nice bourbon nose, very spicy cask strength- not exactly a complex whiskey - but good stuff for bourbon lovers who also like scotch. To make this a 5 star sipper; a few more years in the barrel and some sherry influence would knock this one out of the park. -
Aberlour 16 Year Double Cask Matured
Single Malt — Highlands, Scotland
Reviewed October 28, 2018 (edited December 13, 2021)This is the “salted Carmel latte” of scotchs- tasty, salty, smooth, sweet, and creamy with a beautiful golden color. The nose is bourbony without much sulphur; Initially the sweetness overthrows your tongue, and the the dryness follows up, mellowing out the sugar notes, and then coffee notes come near the end and as you wash it down you get a sort of ... salted raw pie crust finish?.. yep- but it’s nice. This is definitely a dessert scotch and one of the sweetest iv ever tasted - in a good way - but very very sweet none the less. This one will be a nice addition to my arsenal when I get back to the states. Cheers -
Hong Kong 2018; noodles for breakfast, chicken feet and shrimp with the shell fried on under the breading for dinner, censored internet (if it even works at all) and my vision occasionally going blurry from jet lag. its funny how desperation leads to our standards being “lowered”, or maybe it’s that the comfort of basic staples available in our homeland become more desirable when removed from arms reach, or is it our senses are numbed when we grow accustomed to our surroundings and we seek uniqueness and label it “better”?- the waiter brought me a neat glass of JW black - it sat in front of my like naked lady chocolate figurines that had been slowly melted into my cup - and my tongue was riddled with simple pubescent sexual desires. ...after a few sips of this and my satisfaction level might as well have been sipping on a 30 year old scotch in my living room, getting my shoulders massaged, watching godfather 1, with a fresh club sandwich- it was pure deliciousness. Smokey toffee flavored whiskey - the caol ila simmers on the back of your tongue and gives you just enough kick at the end to put a smile of your face- it’s definitely a smooth and fantastic, well here anyway... yes I said “here”; part of me believes these sentiments are boundless and I’m the idiot for convincing myself that $100+ whiskeys are what I need to quench that desire at home, I think it’s me who’s had my whiskey standards displaced- because at home I might not agree with my self, but I know it to be true that: JW black is a very very good whiskey anywhere. Nuff said.
