Macallan 12 Year Sherry Oak Cask
Single Malt — Highlands, Scotland
Reviewed April 27, 2021 (edited April 29, 2021)Aroma has touch of cinnamon, a touch of pencil eraser. Some nutty notes. Touch of sweetness. Yes, some wine or sherry notes. Actually smell some Madeira notes. Nutty notes carry to the flavor. Toasted grain, Wheaties notes. Salty, chocolate, dark bread. Dates. Peppery on the finish. Definite moments of mint or menthol. Sherry notes are present and this is a nice experience as I try to learn and understand how the barrel impacts the flavor. On old favorite with a soft spot in my heart. -
Not much going on here. Aroma and flavor mostly match. Citrus and perfume like. Might be the lightest Scotch I've ever tasted. Lightest cereal note below the orange peel notes. Finish is almost nonexistent. A few drops of water brought out the lightest spice, but overall didn't help. Not really excited about anything here.

Booker's Bourbon Batch 2018-02 Backyard BBQ
Bourbon — Kentucky, USA
Reviewed April 24, 2021 (edited August 26, 2021)So Booker's is a favorite brand of mine and when I am at any location with a great whiskey collection I'll ask which versions of Booker's they have. Husk in Savannah had this so I had to try it. I'll admit I saw the score and saw this version is amongst the lowest Booker's scores ever. After having the glass I have to say, I don't understand that. So it's not among the best, but still very enjoyable. This is the most caramel that I've ever tasted in a Booker's. Salty, Peanut and caramel. Decent finish. Glad to have tried. -
Knob Creek 25th Anniversary Single Barrel Reserve
Bourbon — Kentucky, USA
Reviewed April 24, 2021 (edited February 11, 2022)Another wonderful expression from the folks at Beam. There is a great note of Maple that works nicely with the always present peanut notes from this distillery. Finish was fantastic and a few drops of water accentuated this and the Maple flavor. -
Balvenie Doublewood 12 Year
Single Malt — Speyside, Scotland
Reviewed April 18, 2021 (edited May 6, 2021)This holds a special place in my heart as this was a gateway Scotch for me as I want to learn more about this style of whiskey. Aroma is honey, spice and a distant camp fire. Flavor is honey, some cherry with cinnamon and a touch of nutmeg and black pepper. A moment of Cocoa. A little mint in the finish. 4 drops of water does a nice job extending the finish. -
I've grown to really enjoy this Scotch. Lots going on here. Aroma starts citrus and lemon and opens to more sweetness as it opens. A touch of sugar early that becomes more rounded and nice. Flavor is wonderful and spicy. Touch of Cocoa that later becomes almond like. Lemon & ginger notes with baking spice and some rubber eraser notes. Toasted grain flavors emerge with some drops of water. Just wonderful

Hazelburn 10 Year
Single Malt — Campbeltown, Scotland
Reviewed April 10, 2021 (edited December 2, 2021)Pale in color & light on the palate, but interesting. Menthol, honey with lots of oak and only the lightest wisp of smoke. After adding a couple drops of water notes of caramel and vanilla emerge. -
This was one of the 2 stand outs at a recent tasting. Enjoyed this quite a bit. I got lots of chocolate notes and said as a compliment. It reminded me of Cocoa Crisp cereal at several moments. Strange as I think it's been well over 30 years since I tasted it. But the memory flooded back. Not too sweet, don't think that. Water did nice things to open this.
