Jim Beam Single Barrel Bourbon (95 Proof)
Bourbon — Kentucky, USA
Reviewed January 28, 2017 (edited January 13, 2020)Wow! What's there not to love here? Beginning to end prepare yourself for a rapturous experience. The nose is complex, with oak and vanilla melding with caramel and cinnamon spice. The palate is sweet and delicious, with each of the aforementioned flavours perfectly complimenting one another. The finish is very smooth and spicy, inviting you for more. Sip and love! -
Glenmorangie 18 Year
Single Malt — Highlands, Scotland
Reviewed January 28, 2017 (edited December 31, 2021)Solid, solid, solid, but I'm not sure the $176 CAD is warranted. Despite the marketing behind the product, this whisky is far more floral then it is fruity. Honey is also prominent as the nose is quite pleasant, though subdued. The palate is delicious and smooth, with toffee present and welcomed. The finish is smooth and quite extended. All in all something to enjoy and savour. -
Kings County Bourbon (Discontinued)
Bourbon — New York, USA
Reviewed January 28, 2017 (edited May 16, 2017)Not unpleasant, but ultimately a difficult bourbon to cheer for. There's a certain immaturity to the whisky that I found myself unable to get past, although the honeyed notes are welcome. The finish is smooth and clean, yet predictably short. -
VERY good whisky. Visually, I was surprised by how light its caramel color is - I was wholly unprepared. Think yellow rather than amber. On the nose, the peat is surprisingly subtle with sweet hints of citrus. The palate is medium-bodied with an added layer of smoke (I swear I can taste bacon). The finish is fairly smooth and long. All in all, a wonderful scotch and probably the first bottle I would recommend to someone introducing themselves to the Islay region.

Aberlour 16 Year Double Cask Matured
Single Malt — Highlands, Scotland
Reviewed January 20, 2017 (edited April 19, 2018)My God what liquid wonder! Here's a whisky you will struggle keeping at one dram. The nose has notes of burn sugar and spiced vanilla, the palate is wonderfully fruity, and the finish is incredibly smooth - I am reminded of the expression that simplicity is the highest form of sophistication. If you've had the Highland Park Ice, imagine that degree of smoothness. I am quite impressed. -
Old Pulteney 12 Year
Single Malt — Highlands, Scotland
Reviewed December 17, 2016 (edited August 13, 2017)A decent whisky, and a great introduction to anyone who needs a safe start to the world of scotch. There's neither peat nor smoke, with a pleasant sweet note - especially hints of dark chocolate. The finish is smooth without burn. I wouldn't buy it again, but I'd definitely recommend it. -
Glenmorangie The Original 10 Year
Single Malt — Highlands, Scotland
Reviewed November 26, 2016 (edited August 13, 2017)Disclaimer: I do not generally like whiskies finished in Sauterne wine. This one is no exception. The nose is pleasant enough, and evokes thoughts of cheesecake and orange, but the taste derails the experience, and the finish just lacks finesse. I would not seek a dram again. -
Glenmorangie Nectar D'or 12 Year
Single Malt — Highlands, Scotland
Reviewed November 26, 2016 (edited August 28, 2019)This is only a dessert wine if you have no clue what dessert is supposed to taste like. The nose is arguably the most confusing thing I've ever experienced - I can't actually tell what the hell it is, although I know it's somewhat fruity and sweet. Pleasant. The palate is decent at best and the finish has the most unpleasant of burns, which makes the overall experience somewhat unbalanced and contradictory. -
The Glenrothes Sherry Cask Reserve
Single Malt — Speyside, Scotland
Reviewed November 26, 2016 (edited August 13, 2017)I want to love this whiskey, I really do. The sherry dimension is pleasant and the spices are wonderful, but unfortunately none of it comes together. The nose has a surprising touch of vanilla which is unusual for a sherry cask, and your typical touches of fruits are largely absent here, except for a faint hint of raisin somewhere. The body is full sherry and predominantly spicy, but quite disbalanced as a whole. The finish is somewhat long and pleasant, but ultimately only decent as a whole.
