This is one of my favorite ryes for use in an old-fashioned. Lots of tart fruit on the nose, cinnamon and cedar behind Granny Smith apples balanced by some vanilla Soft palate with late warmth sweeter than I expected The oak comes through later. Barrel notes come through the finish. This is well balanced and delicious.

Joseph Magnus Triple Cask Finished Bourbon
Bourbon — Indiana (Finished and Bottled in Washington DC), USA
Reviewed February 1, 2020Raisins and dates among the Sherry barrels and clove studded oranges and eucalyptus. Soft and Smoky palate with lots of char and burn caramel. Some cacao notes. Vanilla and syrupy sweetness. -
Nose is completely dominated by wood. Barrel char, tree bark, tobacco and burnt caramel something very herbal. Maybe the stump of a rosemary or mint bush. A bit of vanilla in there. Dry, astringent palate. Cedar closet, caramel, more charred wood... a bit of sticky sweetness helps add some dimension.

WhistlePig Old World Series Madeira Finish 12 Year
Rye — Indiana (bottled in Vermont), USA
Reviewed January 25, 2020SO much going on here. Beautiful legs that stick to the glass... Nose has light caramel, the familiar whistle pig rye grain notes and hints from the Madeira and port barrels in the background. Golden raisins in there somewhere. Smooth palate carries a lightly sweet grain front to a finish that goes back and forth between dry oakwood, toasted grains, musty barn, cacao, ripe plum, hay, toasted pecans and brown sugar. -

Nose is dominated by barrel char. Very hot. Some rye comes through as well as notes of dark caramel and hints of cigar smoke and rye. Very hot from the palate down through the finish. A splash of water opens it up a bit and reveals notes of dark cherry and black pepper. Dries a bit at the back and shows the wood.
