Powers John's Lane Release 12 Year
Single Pot Still — Ireland
Reviewed December 28, 2020 (edited March 2, 2021)Nose: vanilla first, then biscuity, raisins, warming spices. Gets spiky easily, when I inhaled bit more deeply. Sometimes very fruity (citrus juice, orange marmelade). Roasted grain. Palate: more friendly, starts sweet, fruity then warming spices getting dominant, bit tart at the end. Creamy texture. Finish: medium, dry, cloves, nuts. I enjoyed the palate and finish more than the nose, due to the spikyness on the nose. Watering it down helped to soften it on the nose. Really complex stuff. Tasting vs Green Spot. Green Spot is much more fruity, Powers is more earthy, leathery. On palate more oaky, more spicy.Maglód -
Arran Machrie Moor Cask Strength
Single Malt — Islands, Scotland
Reviewed December 20, 2020 (edited November 4, 2022)Nose: sweeet, vanilla sweetness, peat. Less sweet vs Laphroaig 10. Some warming spices. Despite being cask strength no alcohol burn. Floral. Citrus. After few sips it is like bubble gum. With water more sweet, less floral. Palate: sweet fruits, then getting pungent. Mouth covering. Finish: bit herbal, tart, smoky, pungent. Very long. With water more oaky. Pepper, dark chocolate and smoke remains for minutes. Overall a bit harsh, feels young but enjoyable. -
Highland Park 12 Year Viking Honour
Single Malt — Islands, Scotland
Reviewed November 23, 2020 (edited August 9, 2023)Nose: bold, sherry bomb. Dark fruits (plum, candied berries). Very sweet, honey. Some aromatic smokiness. Cinnamon. Much more sherried vs Bunna 12. Palate: starts light, gets medium intense spicy. Sweetness and smoky aroma in the background from the beginning to the end. Spiciness just on the ideal level for me, before it would be getting too pungent. More friendly spices vs Bunna 12. Finish: honey sweet, smoky, very faint bitterness. Warming spices remain longer. On the second sip I discovered some tobacco taste at the very end. All together the aftertaste is weaker but more complex vs Bunna 12. This whisky is just perfect for me, especially if we think about price also.40.0 USD per BottleMaglód -
Nose: a bit shy, warming spices, fruits, nuts, orange zest, honey, floral. For the second try it was more sherried, less floral than I remembered. Some burn on nose with deeper breath. Palate: honey sweet, nuts, then pungent just before swallowing it. Finish: sweetness, some spices. Bit of dryness. With water: more floral and fruity on nose. More aggressive spiciness on palate. More dryness at finish. Bit tart. Much longer and bold aftertaste vs Highland Park 12. I enjoyed it more neat. I like more the sherry bombs, or heavy peat that punches, not the pungent spice on the palate. This has no punch on nose, trying to be in between, to deliver something to everyone.Maglód

After few seconds baking spices emerge which become pungent spices in tge tongue.. Aftertaste: peppery, dry, oaky, moderate length. Nuts. For the subsequent sips it becomes more and more spicy, bitter, dry.Maglód -
Nose: floral, like a parfume. I cannot find those tropical fruits. Vanilla sweetness in the background. Palate: sweetness for few seconds then pungent spices, bitterness, oakyness. Finish: long, tart, pungent, dry. Pungent even in the throat. With water: less floral and nutty notes on nose. Less harsh on palate. Overall too harsh for my taste, especially on the palate. Very much oak. Palate is not in sync with nose for me. I can imagine that others enjoy this expression more, but for me it was a wrong choice. Still, part of the journey, so it is allright.Maglód

Single Malt — Taiwan
Reviewed October 22, 2020 (edited May 13, 2021)Nose: fruity (sweet like mango), warming spices, strong vanilla. Some very faint alcohol notes. The floral Kavalan notes from the classic can be found in the background. Palate: first sweet, fruity and light, after few seconds baking spices getting dominant and bit pungent like ginger. Finish: first sip is short but subsequent sips are longer and longer. Spices first, then something remains that i cannot identify for much longer. Little dryness. Overall well balanced but less deep and rich than the Glenmorangie 14.Maglód -
