This came highly recommended from a good friend based on taste and price. I wasn't disappointed in the slightest, but understood the cost. The aroma had a nice one-two punch of baking spice and clove. The flavor somewhat whispered its tasting notes out. I got essences of bread, cocoa, and a sprinkle of black pepper which all persisted to the hasty finish. What had me going was how dangerously it could be consumed. Then again the abv was set at a measley 40% hehe! All in a all a fantastic daily. Very fairly priced at $39.99.39.99 USD per BottleGary's Wine & Marketplace

High West Double Rye
Rye — (bottled in) Utah, USA
Reviewed February 9, 2023 (edited February 10, 2023)A nice complement to the bourbon bottle in this High West gift box. The rye spice is definitely noticeable and welcomed to my palate. Alongside the obvious were some unexpected yet cool flavor/aromatic characters. The whiff test yielded hints of mint, herbs, and honey. The herbal essence translated to the taste with a sidecar of cinnamon candy and soft leather. Slightly sweet and very smooth. -
High West Bourbon
Bourbon — (bottled in) Utah, USA
Reviewed February 3, 2023 (edited December 7, 2023)Got this as a gift through a High West box set. This actually wasn't half bad. So easy to drink. Smooth with a slight warming heat. Not much complexity. But I enjoyed the honey on the nose that led to hints of cornbread, caramel, and subtle rye spice on the palate. -
Redemption High Rye Bourbon Single Barrel Select
Bourbon — USA
Reviewed January 12, 2023 (edited January 14, 2023)Got this as a Xmas present from my bro in law. I must say it was quite the solid pick. The nose was a mix of herbal tones, cinnamon, and perhaps clove. The first couple of sips came out swinging proving its HP'ness. Smoothed out somewhat eventually. The complex flavor was a pleasant surprise. Strong baking and rye spices first then soft oak, fennel, corn, and subtle cocoa later. Not a bad warming sipper if you ask me. Cheers everyone. 🥃 -
Widow Jane Lucky Thirteen Small Batch Bourbon (Fall 2021)
Bourbon — New York, USA
Reviewed January 1, 2023 (edited April 19, 2023)My first experience with anything WJ. Received this as a bday gift from my lovely wife. My first impression after cracking the seal was that it came off a tad hot. Lots of baking spices as well. Similar to red hot candies. I'm happy to report that after a couple more pours (this being my 3rd) things dialed back some. It became much smoother. Interestingly enough I got subtle smoke combined with a prominent leather character throughout. There was also a hint of apple along with the previously experienced baking spices. It's safe to say this opened up very nicely indeed. I'm intrigued enough now to try more of WJ's offerings in the future. But for now, I will thoroughly enjoy the Lucky 13. Which I feel is a lucky number being that I was born on the 13th. 😎🥃 -
Gold Spot 9 Year Single Pot Still
Single Pot Still — Ireland
Reviewed December 2, 2022 (edited July 19, 2023)Been quite a time since I've submitted a review. Life and the lack of any new acquisitions have kept me away. But low and behold the luck of the Irish has smiled upon me. I never thought I'd come across this recent Mitchell and Sons release so soon and for a fair price (for my region) to boot! Let us begin. My first impression was quite satisfactory. The nose yielded a much appreciated plethora of complexities. These consisted of a mix of fresh oak, stone and tropical fruits first. As time passed, the aroma transitioned a bit to vanilla and baking spices. My palate had its work cut out, but in a positive way. A strong fruit and wood spice flavor wave took hold for a bit. After which a prominent sherry wine essence emerged and lingered onto the finish. Mouthfeel was semi oily and dry. I thoroughly enjoyed this and am currently on the lookout for the ever elusive Blue Spot. Once I succeed there, I will do a proper side by side with all the colors.129.0 USD per BottleGary's Wine & Marketplace -
Van Winkle Special Reserve Lot "B" 12 Year
Bourbon — Kentucky, USA
Reviewed August 24, 2022 (edited April 25, 2023)One of my closest friends is undergoing a messy divorce. So we decided to go out with his bro and ease the pain with some quality drinks. Saw this on a special lit shelf and decided what the hell?! We've never had anything Pappy's and you live once. I was stoked to say the least. The aroma yielded some very inviting characters consisting of baked apples, cinnamon, and vanilla. The flavor gave off a similar experience with some added caramel, oak and faint hint of leather. What surprised me was the bite. I didn't expect the burn it provided considering the caliber and hype behind anything Pappy related. It persisted longer than anticipated, but didn't ruin the experience overall. I definitely would buy a bottle if priced fairly, but would steer clear from anything secondary. Not worth the 💰 IMHO.100.0 USD per PourPier 115 -
TINCUP American Whiskey
Other Whiskey — Indiana (bottled in Colorado), USA
Reviewed August 24, 2022 (edited June 24, 2023)I kept forgetting to check this is in from my South Carolina trip. Saw this at a seafood restaurant I visited and decided to give it a shot. I always see them on store shelves, but never pulled the trigger. Not a bad pour. Not much going on nose wise. Maybe some grain. The palate on the other hand had a decent amount of rye spice present. Slight fruit sweetness. The finish was kind of short and pretty dry. Not terrible, just a little underwhelming is all. -
Coming out swinging tonight boys! Rating 2 in a night! Have some making up to do. Plus, I'm watching the Peaky Blinders finale. This show puts me in the mood to drink in general. The wife gifted me a bottle of Blue for Father's Day and was ecstatic. Lots of history and polarization behind it. Awesome or overrated, etc. I'll be the judge/jury best I can. The only experience I have with JW is consuming a bottle of Double Black which I loved lol! I'm about halfway through this bottle and I must say I can see why the hype is strong yet others are not as impressed. IMHO I feel this is a quality pour. Is it worth the $$$? That's up for interpretation. (To me yes) After having double black, I can make a distinct comparison. DB is the hard working, rugged, rough around the edges type. Blue is the upscale, fancy pants, artsy fartsy version. Both are peated significantly. But where DBlack socks you in the taste buds, Blue gently massages your palate. The woody character is sophisticated. There is also a floral aspect to Blue which is quite nice. Hints of dark fruit as well. The smoke endures for a while on the finish which I totally appreciate. Drinks dangerously like water to boot. My advice. If you haven't had this yet, what are you waiting for? If it's been ages since you seasoned veterans have drank this, time for a revisit. Good night and God bless.
