Tastes

Had this as a sample. The nose was the best part and it was fabulous chocolate but overall the flavor profile was just okay. A little odd mixture of chocolate and coffee on the pallet (ratio was off), didn’t sit right but may have been an off night for me. I’m glad that I didn’t go hunting for a bottle as it would have been pricey but glad I got to try it.

Had a sample, will be adding to my stock. Wish I had better tasting notes but my wife took it as her own and that’s a good sign.

Had it as a sample, not bad but light on flavor to compared to others. For $30 a bottles it wouldn’t be bad to have.

Had this as a sample (with 2 other rye’s). Was not a fan and didn’t finish the pour. Nosed and tasted like grass.

The single barrel is very good so when we came across the port finish we had to give it a try. The first sip starts out great but then ends with a sour wine finish. Unfortunately, one bottle is this is all we need.

Nose: I usually don’t say this but, don’t breath in to deep or you might burn your nostrils. There is a good nose but a little to harsh to be pleasant. Pallet: Not as complex as I would have thought with the 115 proof. The overall pallet is smoother than expected with hints of caramel, spice and everything nice. If you like a pour with spice this is for you. Finish: There is a good heat but not to much spice, just get a warm cinnamon. Next time I’ll have to try it with a drop of water to see what else opens up and need to compare this against the Elijah Craig barrel proof. I’m not a huge Larceny fan neat but do enjoy it when a Coke, not ready to do that yet but it might be rather good but would need a acquire another bottle before I tried that.

After breathing for a month the harsh flavor notes have smoother out. The sweetness has started to set in and this pour was rather enjoyable! Like everything with 1792 you may need a backup bottle to enjoy incase you find something you like.

Only have a sample bottle, after breathing with a small cube of ice it started the open up and got a little smoother. Over all it is not unpleasant to sip on the rocks. May be worth getting a bottle to do a full tasting on with friends.

Nose: Simple spice, heavy on the pepper Pallet: Rye spice on the front which is nice but ends in peppery. If that was mellowed out this pour would rate higher. Finish: Sour with some heat Just one dimensional. Working on finishing off the bottle, it’s okay, not worth the 90pts that distiller gave it. If you’re a JIm Beam fan you should have this on our bar. I’ll likely have one just in case someone is a fan and for $23 it’s easy to keep around...

I haven’t met a New Riff that I haven’t liked. When we do taste test of semi premium ryes this is always a good choice.
