What a complex nose. Everything from smoked meat to fruity sherbet. Bread as well. Definite pot still malt smell, but so much more. Smooth on the tongue. This tastes like concentrated peach juice, that's the predominant flavor. Some smoke, some toast, some toffee, every sip brings something else. Some lingering bitter chocolate. Long finish. Good stuff. 6/13/17

Colonel E.H. Taylor, Jr. Cured Oak Bourbon
Bourbon — Kentucky, USA
Reviewed June 13, 2017 (edited April 24, 2018)I get honey and peaches on the nose. Very nice wood odors. Sharp on the tongue, sweet cola flavors. This is unique. Oak and cherry coke. This stands out, in a good way. I could pick this out of a lineup. Very well done. Too bad these are unicorns. 6/13/17 -
Old Tub Kentucky Straight Bourbon
Bourbon — Kentucky, USA
Reviewed June 13, 2017 (edited August 28, 2017)Strong heat on the nose, apple cider and some curry notes as well. after a few minutes I get vanilla and shellfish. This feels substantial on the tongue, but initially the taste is thin. The flavor kicks in at the end. Honey, baking spices, orange zest, peanuts. Short to medium finish. Lots of bang for your buck. If I ever visit the distillery, I'm buying one or three. 6/13/17 -
Parker's Heritage Wheat Whiskey 13 Year
Wheat Whiskey — Kentucky, USA
Reviewed June 13, 2017 (edited June 27, 2017)Smells sweet, floral, and strong. Some paper, wood notes as well. Proof hits you hard, but this is a glorious pain. Sweet caramel, spicy, some herbs like nutmeg. Good vanilla. This finish is ridiculously long. This is full and rich in ways that are hard to reconcile with standard Bernheim. Some Parker Beam magic here. 6/13/17 It's been a year since I've had this! Fortunately snagged the last available pour at No.9 Park in Boston. Strong nose, intense sweet clove honey, some vanilla, maybe a hint of grass. Wow, smooth on the palate, with immediate tingling spice that never goes away, a gentle warmth that seems to crescendo until you admit the proof. You feel the proof more in the chest than the mouth. The floral honey carries over, and some good musty wood notes at the end. Very good stuff. Again, the finish is loooooooong. 6/27/18 -
Bruichladdich The Classic Laddie
Single Malt — Islay, Scotland
Reviewed June 12, 2017 (edited July 8, 2017)Strong barley, stewed fruits, salt, and soda on the nose. Some medicinal notes as well. Thick and oily on the tongue, almost syrupy. It's sweeter than a standard single malt but there's a nice spice and heat kick that prevents this from being cloying. The proof really shines through here. Cereal and bitter chocolate linger, as well as smoke. Maybe I can't tell the difference between smoke and peat, but this still to me has slight peat notes, even though this is unpeated, maybe it just speaks to the region, the distinct flavor must permeate the air and water in Islay. This is very rich, anyone will find something in this that they'll like. 6/12/17 -
Belle Meade Bourbon Sherry Cask Finish
Bourbon — Indiana (bottled in Tennessee), USA
Reviewed June 9, 2017 (edited April 24, 2018)Wine notes on the nose, honey. Silky, rich. The sherry finish is noticeable. Sweet honey, pleasant spice. Funky yet delicious flavor, almost reminds of Midwinter Night's Dram in that way. Dark chocolate on the finish. This has strong flavors but is well balanced. 6/9/17 -
Jim Beam Black Label Extra-Aged
Bourbon — Kentucky , USA
Reviewed June 8, 2017 (edited July 27, 2017)Wood,wood. and wood on the nose. Some mustiness, nuts, and vanilla as well. Surprisingly smooth on the tongue. Hints of walnuts and some dark chocolate. You definitely get the standard Beam black cherry walnut cocktail. Not sure this actually is the highest rated bourbon in the world (ISWC 2016), but this has a lot of bang for the buck. Jim Beam Bonded is better, but this is more amenable to session sipping. 6/8/17
