Mosswood Espresso-Aged American Light Whiskey
Other Whiskey — (aged and bottled in California), USA
Reviewed June 25, 2017 (edited April 24, 2018)Floral notes on the nose, along with some chocolate. Definitely a light whiskey. It's sweet, and the coffee notes are noticeable on the backend, there's a nice lingering espresso shot. Goes great with cigars. 6/25/17 -
Fighting Cock 6 Year Kentucky Straight Bourbon
Bourbon — Kentucky, USA
Reviewed June 25, 2017 (edited October 20, 2017)NAS version. Alcohol and wood on the nose. Sweet and spicy up front. Caramel and mulled cider notes. Lingering white pepper. A bit rough, but the flavors are good. Almost like an unrefined Weller Antique 107. 6/25/17 Had it again. Nothing like Old Weller 107, hahah, but still good. Actually more of a Beam profile. 7/13/17 -
Evan Williams Single Barrel Vintage
Bourbon — Kentucky, USA
Reviewed June 19, 2017 (edited March 27, 2018)2008 batch. On the nose, strong oak, sweet vanilla, brown sugar and honey. Some fruit as well. After a few minutes, some peanuts. Smooth on the tongue with the perfect amount of bite. Caramel flavors, some wood and a bit of cinnamon. Peanutty aftertaste that lingers for a short minute. Good warmth going down. Delicious. One of the best bargains out there. 6/24/17 Put in oak 2006, 6/17/06 - 7/23/15. Very fragrant nose, floral, oak, caramel. Spicier than the 2008, it seems. Oakier, the longer barrel time comes through. Some fruit notes, hint of vanilla, some sweetness, and lingering spice. Great value. 11/9/17. Barreled in 2004, bottled 2014. The older bottles are definitely more oaky. Still very good for its price point. 1/25/18 -
Wathen's Single Barrel Bourbon
Bourbon — Kentucky, USA
Reviewed June 19, 2017 (edited June 21, 2017)Tastes like honey roasted peanuts. Sweet up front, some faint wood notes. Short finish. Slightly harsh at the end. Don't let the Elmer-duplicate bottle fool you, but this stands on its own. Maybe overpriced by 5 or 10 dollars. 6/19/17 The strong peanut scents remind me of Heaven Hill (perhaps the source of this juice?), which I like, and that's coupled with banana and a bit of char. So this smells like an Elvis Presley sandwich. On the palate, honey roasted peanuts and wood. A bitter aftertaste remains (think pecan shells), and gets stronger as you go. Short finish. Adding some limestone water brought out some vanilla on the nose. I do like this, but again, I would enjoy it a lot more if it were $10 cheaper. 6/21/17 -
Laphroaig Càirdeas 2016 Madeira Cask
Single Malt — Islay, Scotland
Reviewed June 16, 2017 (edited April 24, 2018)Once the hospital smell dissipates, the nose is pleasant. Some fruit, smoke. Unfortunately for me, the iodine returns on the palate. Some sweetness up front in a way that is unusual for a peated whisky. Silky feel. 6/16/17 -
Four Roses Limited Edition Bourbon Elliott's Select (2016)
Bourbon — Kentucky, USA
Reviewed June 16, 2017 (edited March 18, 2021)108 proof. Stupendous nose, rich caramel, honey, vanilla, herbs. Great spice on the tongue, nice mouthfeel. Cinnamon, apples, wood, dark chocolate. Mouth watering with a very long finish. Some sharp (good) flavors but this is well balanced. A credit to Brent Elliott. 6/16/17 Still very good, but this has chanced with air time, and unfortunately to my palate, not for the better. There is a more noticeable bitter note on the palate and the other flavors seem more muted than before. Some might welcome this change but I liked it better the first few times I poured from this bottle. But again, still a very good bourbon. Very warm going down, deep Kentucky hug. 10/8/17 -
Jim Beam Distiller's Masterpiece
Bourbon — Kentucky, USA
Reviewed June 13, 2017 (edited April 24, 2018)Not sure what Ximenez sherry smells like, but there is a unique smell to this. A bit briny as well. Familiar Beam profile, but yet, different. Great heat, good sweetness, pleasant spice. Very smooth for the proof, but still a good flavor kick. Nutty and slightly fruity, dark fruits. 6/13/17
