Redwood Empire Lost Monarch Whiskey
Blended American Whiskey — USA
Reviewed June 20, 2022 (edited July 16, 2022)Caramel, apple, rye, pear, dill, spruce tips, cinnamon and toast on the very fresh nose. Smooth, spicy and sweet on the palate, dominated by rye, but with caramel, toasty, vanilla, apple and peppery flavors. Dry peppery finish. Rich, complex, nice. -
Mini bottle b/c it was near the register and I’d likely never buy a bottle of this. Ehhh on the nose; grain, ethanol, some melon, a dab of honey. On the palate it’s lightly honeyed barley and shrimp shell. And that’s it. Not incredibly offensive but incredibly boring. I’m glad I only got a mini.Total Wine & More

On the nose it’s more or less peppery vodka with just a hint of sugar cane and a bit of leather. On the palate it’s pretty similar; some sweetness and pepper; very cheap vodka-like with hints of citrus rind. It’s just alcohol at the finish. Not offensive like Bacardi, but certainly mixer only.Total Wine & More

Earl Settler Kentucky Straight Bourbon
Bourbon — Crestwood, KY, USA
Reviewed June 16, 2022 (edited September 22, 2022)Mini bottle because it was by the check out line and I’m actually up for trying anything, whatever the expectations. While not impressive by any stretch, this is better than the previous two. At least this one is two years old! Pale nose of corn, caramel, saw dust, apple and ethanol. Sweet, with caramel, corn and apple flavors. Not really a finish. Still, it’s a win, as this is definitely better than I thought it would be. -
I’ve had an awful tequila or two in my day, but this may take the gold medal. Very pale. On the nose there’s faint agave, concrete minerality, harsh chemical astringency, club soda, metal and metal polish, and surprisingly a faint touch of vanilla. On the palate more of the same. It’s harsh, mineral, chemical, etc. and slightly sweet. Now I know what the Joker tasted when he fell in that vat of chemicals. Purchased for a party to make a tub of margaritas, I suppose it was ok for that, but I didn’t try them. But I guess for the masses that don’t know or care, at $9.99 this was a good buy. @twostal Venmo me $10 and I’ll snag one for you.Total Wine & More

Mini bottle because this doesn’t look good but what the hell. Very pale as expected after “a year and a day”. (P.s. I don’t think the extra day does anything. Nor does it seem an effective marketing gimmick when it comes to something that for which quality actually takes time. But what do I know about marketing bottom shelf whiskey?) On the nose it’s weak; mostly ethanol, with toasted grain and hints of vanilla, pepper and apple. On the palate it’s thin, not far beyond a white, sweet and boozy, with alcohol, sugar, pepper and a touch of vanilla. Alcohol and sugar finish.

Mini bottle. Just because. Lol bourbon aged 1year? It looks it. Very pale. Candy corn, ethanol, and hints of oak and apple in a nose that’s weak in all respects other than the alcohol. Despite the relatively low proof, the palate is harsh alcohol with rye, sugar and candy corn. Ethanol finish. Run away, seriously.
