Willett Family Estate Small Batch Rye 4 Year
Rye — Kentucky, USA
Reviewed August 29, 2020 (edited December 9, 2020)Uncorking - Nose- Rye. Like straight up rye in a way I have never had so pronounced before. Almost medicinal. Candy. Like a cough drop or syrup. Flavor rye spice is strong again. Along with some golden raisins. Almost a syrup wine note in there, like a port, towards the end. I would have guessed this was finished in wine barrels. It's flavor and nose remind me of scotch beers like Irish Death. There are some identical notes in the palate. Maybe a bit of hard candy snaps but not ginger. Something else. Finish is lots of fruit. Dark roasted cereals. Some gentle smoke and oak light on the edges from the barrel. First whiskey I have tasted pineapple or mango in. The fruit is strong in the end. Worth really chewing on as more and more develops. Definitely falls into the interesting category and one of the more unique drams I have poured. It's quite good even if it or maybe because it defies it's category. -
High West Campfire (Discontinued)
Blended American Whiskey — (bottled in Utah), Multiple Countries
Reviewed August 29, 2020 (edited October 14, 2020)Smoke on the nose along with vanilla, pears, roast apple, peat and wood. Light spice. Good bourbon rich, fruity and nicely oaked but with the added complexity of peat smoke. More wood and peat in the finish. I was afraid they wouldn't mesh but they actually.work great together. -
Booker's Bourbon Batch 2020-01 "Granny's Batch"
Bourbon — Kentucky, USA
Reviewed August 29, 2020 (edited September 22, 2020)Uncorking - major peanuts and cashews on the nose, caramel and light spice too. Taste rolls though a variety of flavors starting strong with more dry peanuts and buttery popcorn, followed by spices and vanilla. Closes in the finish with menthol, dark oak, spices and almost like peanut shells. It lingers pleasantly. -
Knob Creek Small Batch Bourbon (NAS)
Bourbon — Kentucky, USA
Reviewed August 25, 2020 (edited August 29, 2020)A Quintessential bourbon. If you like base Knob Creek just turn it up a pinch and you have small batch 100 proof. Buttered corn, caramelizing sugars, hints of oak and vanilla on the nose and a match on the palate. No surprises here except how much sweetness punches at the end. Finishes with very little green spice, this is nearly all sweet corn, oak and sugars. Easy to sip and a great value choice. -
Ardbeg Corryvreckan
Single Malt — Islay, Scotland
Reviewed August 24, 2020 (edited December 6, 2020)3rd tasting. Now it's ripe fruit dark berry and sweet on the front of nose that I didn't get much before but heavy ash and peat and salt still there. Cigar ashtray initially. Oily feel and some orange peel on the sides of my mouth. Hints of dark fruit and chocolate. Smoke tastes is very ashy and a little like how smoked salmon smell would taste. Not fishy but oily meat and ash. Under it all is a lot of sweetness. Finish is definitely a salty peat bog but bits of dark chocolate and coffee bean bitters that actually balances out the finish. You need to work for it to get the flavors but that is what I think I like. Salty Smoked chocolate, dark roasted coffee bean that was over heated w charred dark berry in a glass. -
Glenfiddich 12 Year
Single Malt — Speyside, Scotland
Reviewed August 23, 2020 (edited August 24, 2020)First time having Glenfiddich 12 in a long time. It's a staple speyside with approachable fruit mostly pear for me, a bit floral, malty and I get a hint of chocolate which apparently no one else does. The oak is mostly towards the end and subtle with a gentle finish. This would be an easy dip into Scotch for a newbie and a nice benchmark for scotch the way Buffalo Trace is for bourbon to me. -
Nose- campfire but if you are burning sappy logs. Taste - smoke initially then smoke and ash, them finishes with smoke. Seriously. There are light tickles of phenol on the nose, vanilla on the palate, some spice then finish has a little peat and sea salt. But those are at a 3 and smoke is an 11. It hits the itch if you want a pure smoke bomb but lacks nuance or depth. Water and ice didn't change much but the flavor of the smoke. Tried it in a fevertree smoked ginger beer. This is it's happy place. If I ordered this in Vegas for $25 I'd be impressed. Sweet and smokey balanced out with hints of oak and spicy bourbon and ginger. If I had a line wedge it would be perfect evening drink by the campfire.

1792 Full Proof Straight Bourbon
Bourbon — Kentucky, USA
Reviewed August 23, 2020 (edited October 2, 2020)Uncorking - neat -Baked apples and bananas with walnuts follow a lot of proof on the nose. This doesn't hide it's proof like Stagg Jr does for me. Sweet apples, almost oaty or light caramel with nuts and ripe bartlet pears. Does a lot of spice and heat. A few drops of water takes all the burn off the nose and mellows the bite a ton. Now I really get golden fruits, soft caramels and some wood I didn't have before. One of the few glasses I really preferred it with water. Once ice cube brought more mellowing but a tart cherry like a cherry pit. Easy to drink on the rocks.
