Nose- Spicy, caramel, spearmint, dry grasses, some floral notes. Palate- softer flavors than it smelled though the alcohol feels above 83 proof, rye spice, some soft mint, pepper, clove, clover honey Finish - peppery over brown sugar, breathes in that minty rye ending Interesting enough I want to see what the barrel proof or a longer aged bottle would offer.

Balvenie Portwood 21 Year
Single Malt — Speyside, Scotland
Reviewed February 16, 2021 (edited March 12, 2021)Tasted at a bar. Nose- honey and pears. Taste- Really easy to sip, some under ripe red apples and more pears, the honey sweetness comes through, a bit of barrel wood but not what I'd expect for the age. It was coming off a bit muted but very well rounded. I'd hand this to someone who equates "smooth" with quality in a heart beat but for my taste it was a bit down the middle. Finish was more.sweet fruits, gentle green grass. -
Uncorking- Nose- Smoke and ash, peat, salty air, some slightly sweet caramel and vanilla. Taste- full, oily, rich instant peat smoke, ash, you get some oak and hints of light fruit. It gets sweeter with a few drops of water with more vanilla/caramel. The smoke gets more distinct too but didn't seem stronger or lighter. Finish- might have to make the notes tomorrow. So long I kept forgetting and taking another sip. This is minutes and it's sweetness with smoke. Not meat smoke, it's peat and wood. Some hints of orange citrus lingering around I wasn't getting earlier.139.99 USD per Bottle

Alberta Premium Cask Strength Rye
Canadian — Alberta, Canada
Reviewed February 2, 2021 (edited April 7, 2021)Uncorking- Nose- Rye spice dominates but let it sit for 10 min and it opens up a lot. Banana, rye, light char, burnt caramel. Hints of mint and pine cones. Very little burn for a 132 proof. The spice mellows on the nose quick. From a certain angle I strongly get cola syrup. Another smells like a cotton candy machine. This is complex and intriguing. Taste- tons of flavor, big hug, heavy rye spice followed quickly by spiced nutty banana bread. Oily rich mouthfeel, mellows into some fruity sweetness. The word the comes to mind is balanced. Don't mistake that for mild, this is not. Hard to achieve with such bold flavors. Some deeper rich flavors like barrel woods, oak, cedar, candy like with toasted rye bread. Finish- mellow sweetness and spice lingers a long time on the tongue. Mildly drying it also makes my mouth water. The heat lingers a long time and give my tongue tingles. Overall I'm really impressed with this bottle. This is restoring my faith in Canadian Whiskey. This is one of the top ryes I have tasted this year.72.99 USD per Bottle -
Los Vecinos Del Campo Mezcal Artesanal
Mezcal Joven — Valles Centrales region of Oaxaca, Mexico
Reviewed February 2, 2021Uncorking- Disclaimer I'm not a Mezcal or tequila drinker normally but picked this up for a family member. Nose - diesel fuel, smoke and almost rubber notes, some tropical fruits, earthiness. Taste- surprisingly pleasant, spice kicks first then almost like an Islay with notes of burning rubber, smoke, an earthy mossy quality all over layers of sweet fruit. Finish is quick mostly smoke, diesal and rubber notes. Like a truck stop but not in a bad way. Bandaids comes through in the finish too. Overall- The smoke tastes almost artificial and the finish is short but I could drink this. Probably be amazing in a cocktail. If you like high peat and smokey Islay this might be an option to explore. -

Calumet Farm 14 Year Single Rack Black Bourbon
Bourbon — Kentucky , USA
Reviewed January 24, 2021 (edited March 10, 2021)Uncorking- Nose- Vanilla, oak, hay, peanut brittle, raw corn, molasses, crispy brown caramalized sugars. The rye lingers in back and the sides. Lots of thick legs and a gorgeous deep tea color. Taste- oak and char, nice oily mouthfeel, toasted oat cereal, caramel and vanilla with subtle spices. No burn but a bit of linger heat. Tiny hits of cherry and red licorice too when you get some air along with perfume. Finish- moves more heavily into the vanilla extract and rye spice with dark berries and plums I didn't get earlier on any tastes. Surprised by the lower scores here. I don't factor cost in my scoring so maybe that's it. I'd buy this again at ~$100. Note on a fresh bottle of this give it at least 5 min in the glass. It really opened up from a "meh." to a "Yeah!". I'm getting a Sazerac feeling here. Not sure if it's sourced but if you like Handy this is a bit of baby Handy with less complexity, punch and mouthfeel.
