Tequila El Mayor Extra Añejo Rum Cask Finish
Tequila Extra Añejo — Tequila Valley, Jalisco, Mexico
Reviewed May 2, 2021 (edited July 24, 2022)Neat. Golden straw color, coats the glass with long legs. Aroma is agave with the slight, but noticeable hogo from the rum barrel, slight mineral and herbs. Taste is sweet with agave mixed with sugar cane, vanilla, slight oak, herbs, some dessert spices (cardamom, nutmeg/allspice). Richness/mouthfeel is fairly thin. Finish is long, sweet, but with some tart/bitterness for a little balance. I think it's absolutely delicious. I love the rum barrel influence. Tastes natural. But, I don't get near the oak, caramel/butterscotch, vanilla, richness, and color that you'd think from an extra añejo. It really feels like an reposado aged in used rum barrels. Which is fine since the typical EA flavors would likely mask the rum and be too syrupy sweet. Then there's my struggle. Value. Paying XA+ prices when there's nothing XA about it..but dang it's good and unique.135.0 USD per Bottle -
Neat. Medium brass with long legs on the glass. Nose is bright and fruity with apple or pear hard cider with some oak, caramel, vanilla, then slight agave, earth, and green herbs. Taste starts bright with a little heat. Caramel, musty oak, vanilla, lightly cooked fruity agave making a big appearance, with the hot cinnamon and milk chocolate, Fresh green herbs/mint leaf notes coming later. Finish is sweet, oaky, spicy, with the sweet oak lasting quite a while. Well balanced. The oak aging notes still leave plenty of the blanco brightness. Sweet, but not overly rich and syrupy. As with the blanco, I felt a little underwhelmed at first sip of a new bottle, but it got considerably more complex and interesting with some air time. The flavor profile is unique. There's a tangy cider like acidity that adds a brightness to otherwise rich flavors that I appreciate. Worth trying, cool bottle, but a little on the pricey side with some very good options for a little less72.0 USD per Bottle

Dos Armadillos Tequila Plata
Tequila Blanco — Jalisco, Mexico
Reviewed April 30, 2021 (edited November 23, 2021)Neat. Crystal clear with long legs on the glass. Aroma is agave, fruit, earth, black pepper, citrus peel, herbal/vegetal, floral, slight mint. Taste starts with cooked agave, lots of candied fruit and some citrus. Minerals, brine, slightly bitter herbs, black pepper keep it well balanced leading into a long, tart, dry finish with sweet This gets much more interesting as it opens up, definitely let this sit out and don't judge on a first pour of a bottle. It was a little one note at first, but I keep finding layers as I slowly go through the pour. Unique, good juice, fun bottle, a little on the pricey side..but worth trying at least once50.0 USD per Bottle -
Neat. Deep mahogany color. Nose is..whew..don't get too close..but obvious ethanol..Molasses, fruitcake (dried fruits..raisin, cherry, pineapple), hogo, and allspice. Sip carefully..molasses, banana candy, dried pineapple. Finish is long and dry. Sweet, fruity, hogo, cinnamon and nutmeg Delicious, but too intense as a sipper. I'd add some ice or a mixer to bring out the nuances37.0 USD per Bottle

Neat. Beautiful deep copper color. Nose is tropical with molasses, ripe banana, coconut, sherry, dried fruits, some citrus. Taste is deep caramel sweet, some musty oak, sherry, dried fruits, a hint of barrel spice..pepper;cinnamon/nutmeg. Finish is fairly dry and soft with a little oak and fruit Easy to drink, pretty and tropical profile with a bit of spice and oak to keep it balanced. Flavors are very good, but on the light side. Punches above its price point. Decent as a light sipper, but I can see this shining in some simple mixed drinks20.0 USD per Bottle

Neat. Color is a light straw with long legs in the glass. Aroma is unique with cooked agave, caramel green apple, citrus, oak, vanilla. Taste is cooked agave sweet, fruits and citrus with black pepper and cinnamon and slight oak, caramel, vanilla, cinnamon, with hints of barley malt, hops, cocoa powder. Finish is long, sweet with vanilla, black pepper and cinnamon, oak tannins, and very slight hops. I really enjoyed this one. More bright than the 2019 blend with he apples, citrus, and hops and less wood influence. Must try for blanco lovers that want to try a little more wood complexity without sacrificing the agave80.0 USD per Bottle

Taste is similar..sweet cooked agave, a little cinnamon, roasted pear, slight oak, vanilla, herbs, butterscotch, ripe banana, black pepper. Finish is pretty long, sweet with a little vanilla, oak tannins, herbs, olives Overall very complex and easy to drink. Many flavors to explore that seem to change throughout the sipping and even by pour. A little on the pricey side, but I can't think of anything else with this flavor profile. Must try and keep a bottle around for special occasions65.0 USD per Bottle -
Neat. Lovely dark brassy color. Nose is bright, fruity and funky. Banana candy, pineapple, leather, and solvent (in a good way. Taste is sweet molasses, tobacco/leather, pineapple and other tropical fruits, cherry candy, and woo.. all kinds of funky esters... I think I got a little new car smell/taste as well. Words fail this review. It's an absolute experience for the flavor adventurous if sipping. Where I see this shining is as a mixer. It combines high proof rum with bitters or an apertif It would turn the simplest fruit juice into a complex tropical drink.29.0 USD per Bottle

Fortaleza Añejo Tequila
Tequila Añejo — Tequila Valley, Jalisco, Mexico
Reviewed February 27, 2021 (edited January 7, 2022)Enjoying neat. Lovely golden straw color. Coats the glass nicely. Nose is fresh oak, char, agave, earth/minerals, brine, light caramel, vanilla, citrus, and fresh herbs. Rich, creamy, and oily mouthfeel. Taste starts roasted agave, caramel, fresh oak, vanilla. A lot of complex flavors come in, vegetal, brine, mint, some slight funky umami/yeast notes, cinnamon, pineapple. Finish is nice and long with flavors changing over more than 60 seconds. Sweetness, oak tannins, fruit, slight anise, mint, black pepper...and more Wow. One of the most complex tequilas that I've tried. Sweet and savory notes. Lots of wood, but light on vanilla, which i prefer. It's a little pricey, but it's absolutely worth it. Additive free and superb quality90.0 USD per Bottle
